Cherry Hinton - the "unofficial Cambridge site"

This story happened on: 13/01/2015

I've passed this site many times over the years since I lived not too far away as a girl but this week we actually stayed in it. A sharp bend off the main road leads quickly into the site, which not surprisingly for the time of year was very quiet. The roads dip and bend to provide cul-de-sacs, all enclosed with the chalk pit walls that surround it.
Although this is not a particularly child-friendly site there is a chalk pit reserve 2 minutes walk away. The pit and nearby green area both have paths to cycle or walk and the large expanse of space could be the base for plenty of family games.
Not far way (but a short drive) are the Gog Magog hills. Now there aren't many hills in East Anglia and this one provides a dramatic view of the Cambridge skyline from the rural confines of the Gog Magog. There is a large path around the perimeter and the central green is popular for sledging in the winter and games in the summer.
Cambridge is extremely close and I think this might be the reason for many of the visits to the CC site; there is no Caravan Club site in Cambridge so this is unofficially the Cambridge CC site too I suppose. The lovely historic university city offers a wealth of activities and beautiful sights.
A couple of recommendations for families:
- Cambridge Science Centre
The centre is an educational charity. It provides a range of hands-on exhibitions and regular workshops covering a variety of scientific concepts. No visit is the same as the workshops change regularly throughout the year. It is a must visit for families visiting the area.
- Punting
This is a summer option. Unfortunately we were not able to go punting at this time of year but can thoroughly recommend it. During the summer months, the river Cam at the backs of the universities are gridlocked with tourists and locals vying for water as they wobble
