A magical evening wild camping in Dartmoor

We have lived in our caravan for over a year now and enjoy the comforts that it has to offer, particularly as a home and base with which to explore the country but still love to camp out whenever the opportunity arises, in campsite and wild camp. Our most recent camp out was in Dartmoor, the only place in England where it is legal to wild camp. Leaving the busy, bustling Hillhead Caravan Club site behind us, we headed into Dartmoor National Park. Parking our van in Postbridge, we set off into the countryside following the river Dart towards its source, passing walkers and fellow campers on the way. After walking only a couple of miles, we found an idyllic spot to set up camp: a flat, grassy bank of the river which proved to be a popular spot for the nearby Dartmoor ponies and cows who seemed a little bemused by our arrival. We set up the tent in and then settled in for an afternoon of fun and relaxation. The time was easily filled with creative and physical tasks such as making boats out of river reeds and of course checking if they floated; playing grass javellin, tig and other traditional games as well climbing the nearby hill for a view of the countryside before settling down for the night in the tent.
