A child's In:site in Hillhead Caravan Club site

 

"As soon as the friendly warden let us through the barrier into the site, we mazed around the site mouths glued open and craning our necks to look at the child friendly on site activities on site for as long as possible. Straight away we went to inspect the play area. There was everything we could imagine, a curly slide, a skateboard practice area, spinning cup seats, a grassy maze and a football pitch next to the dog walk. 

 

Then once the caravan was set up we scootered over to the swimming pool and restaurant area. There was a play pool with a turning barrel full of water that pours onto your head, animals that squirt water and next to that a 20m long pool the same depth all the way along. It is a heated outdoor pool so is warmer than you'd expect. Next to the pool is the games room and restaurant.  Delicious food is served in the evenings including children's meals, carvery and meals ideal for vegetarians. With an open roof to sit under you can relax in the sun.If it does rain the roof closes so instead you can watch the news from the tellies on the walls. If you have any change weighing down your pocket, put a few of them in a change machine and play a few car/zombie/2p machine games in the games room. This was my favourite site and I totally recommend giving it a visit weather it is for the bingo, the adult-only swimming times or to take your kids on a fandabbiedosey holiday."

 

There is so much to do on site you don't really have to leave but here are a few activities to do in the area:

Brixham is the nearest town to the Hillhead Caravan Club site and well worth a visit. It is known for its fishing harbour and in particular one boat that is moored there all year round - the Golden Hind, a replica of the original boat that Sir Francis Drake used to circumnavigate around the world. A good way to get to know the town is to complete the 2.5 mile Blackbeard's Trail, taking in the back streets, gardens, coves and harbour, reading information boards about the history, flora and fauna. The kids will enjoy the challenge of collecting the 7 clues that reveal where Blackbeard's secret scroll is and will no doubt enjoy the reward of completing the trail as well as a slice of Devon apple pie or Cream Tea in one of the many cafes in the harbour.

 

Brixham also offers other pirate related attractions that might appeal to your budding Jack Sparrows, including a Smugglers and Pirates Experience, regular Pirate days held throughout the summer and a heritage museum.

 

If you're looking for a family cycle ride you'll have to go further afield since most cycling is on roads near Brixham. We headed towards Dartmoor and hired bikes from Dartmoor Cycles, who were conveniently located next to Drake's Trail, a  walk and cycle route from Tavistock to Plymouth. The route is named after the Elizabethan sea-farer who was born and died in the area. There is a statue of him at the start and end of the trail. The trail takes in wooded valleys, rivers and moorland dotted with Dartmoor ponies. It is linear and the full distance is 21 miles, therefore 42 if you plan to travel there and back, although you can turn around at any point.
