Caravan Storage Compound Raided

This story happened on: 12/09/2012

We went to out caravan on Monday afternoon to get ready for our next trip to find the door open and low and behold the inside of the van was in a mess, but worse to come a total of 25 other vans had been broken into, TV's Awnings, even a Mattress was stolen. Our site was I thought very secure, it cannot be seen from the road, trees all around, a 5 bar gate that's padlocked opposite the owners home on a working farm, only 1 way in and out and thats through the gate. Surely a well planned raid that must have took some considerable time and a large van to take all the stuff away.

We only started to caravan this year and we thought we had got off to a bad start as all 5 trips the weather was awful raining on every trip, now I'm really gutted and totall p***ed off. Where they stealing to order? surely it was  targeted?. I phone the clubs claim dept and they did'nt seem to care less did'nt want my policy number, no reference number, just told to fill in the claims form and send it off,. Angry? Yes, Dissalusioned? Yes. Will we carry on? Yes. No way will this put us off although I will be eager to see what the owner now does to increase security and will be looking to find a more secure inside storage unit.

So sorry to read about your misfortune. The storage site doesn't seem very secure though. Our site has 7ft high fencing all around it, there is CCTV and the site gate can only be opened with a key fob. The gate is also 7ft high. In addition there are 3ft x 3ft x 3ft concrete blocks behind every storage bay. Hope you get recompensed by the insurance company and manage to find more secure storage. Regards, Chris

Oh what a nightmare! Can I ask where this storage was? I know people that had a similar experience in Senlac Wood, Nr Battle, East Sussex.

Really sorry to hear of your trouble, hopefully you did tell the insurance company about the storage, as my neighbour had his van stolen from a similar location within 2 nights of the van being at the storage site. Twin axle 5 berth 3 security devices on the van, but insurance wouldn't pay.

Write your comments here...I think it's best if I don't give it's location but it was not  Senlac

Write your comments here... Hi Chris, it's really quite secure which is more of a worry that it's someone that has used the site, only one entry and exit by a 5 bar gate fenced all round and very high trees to screen it, the owner had 1 caravan stolen 5 years ago, they drove it across the hay field so he went and dug a ditch to stop that happening again. Heis getting floodlights and CCTV installed and moved me out of the compound into a Haybarn close to the gate(none of the vans in the barns where touched)although I'm still very nervous and looking for alternative secure storage.
