Pembrey Experiences

This story happened on: 16/10/2012

The better half and myself were heading for the Aberdare Park Road Races in July this year. We go there every year to help marshall the meeting but this year we decided to extend our stay in Wales with a visit to Pembrey and what a good decision that was. We booked quite late but the dates we asked for were available and after a trek along the M4 and a shimmy through Llanelli and Burry Port we arrived to find the site full. So it was a case of Hobson's choice with only one pitch available but it was delightful and would have been high on our list of desirable pitches anyway.

The site is adjacent to the entrance to the Pembrey Country Park which is huge and has some fabulous facilities not least of which is one of the biggest beaches you will find in these fair isles. 2012 wasn't noted for its fine weather yet we had a glorious five days there. Our cycles served us well with trips around the country park and along the coastal cycle path to Burry Port with its convenient shops and cashpoints, not to mention its friendly pubs.

We had to visit Kidwelly Castle which is only a few miles away from Pembrey. Incidentally, the locals pronounce it "Pem bray" rather than "Pembree". This gave us the chance to also visit the highly recommended Anthony's Hotel for a meal. Their food and their service was out of this world and booking in advance is always a good idea. It was also a chance to sample the local Felin Foel ale.

We thoroughly enjoyed Pembrey and will be aiming to make this an annual visit on our way to Aberdare and the madness which is their road races. Any motor cycle enthusiasts out there should consider a visit to this event which sees fast machines racing around the town park's perimeter path. It has to be seen to be believed. Look for Rosie and Jim there, we marshall post 10!
