Day Four: Scottish Caravan Tour

This story happened on: 06/02/2013

The day started near Milngavie, which looks like it should be pronounced “miln-gavy” when it’s written but is actually pronounced “mil-guy” by the natives, at a little Certificated Location just out of town. I saw three deer there this morning but it was too dark to do any photography and by the time the sun had come up, they’d slipped away into cover. So, I closed down shop, upped sticks and moved the Green Goddess to the Strathclyde Country Park Caravan Club Site. It’s the newest site on the networt, only opening in the autumn last year, I was pleased to see the site had a rubbish recycling area, which allowed me to dispose of everything I had accumilated while touring for the last four days. It’s in a great position just on the outskirts of Glasgow city but nestled on the edge of a country park, so there is a nice rural feel. It’s a great place to cycle and walk through, with no doubt lots of wildlife to see. But what I really wanted to do was investigate a little loch in the city, called Hogganfield, and  I’m really glad I did. As well as seeing  many familiar birds such as Mallard duck’s, Mute swan’s and Coot’s, I also saw a good number of Whooper swan’s. These are migratory birds that come from breeding grounds in Iceland, who come to our shores for the winter. I couldn't believe how tame they were here at the park. all because they are used to seeing so many people who come here to feed them. Alongside them were other wonderful water birds such as Goosander, both male and female, coming in to feed on bread, which is so unusual! Goosander are saw billed ducks that usually chase fish but here they are coming for handouts! Alongside them was another infrequently sighted duck called the Goldeneye, so all-in-all a wonderful opportunity to get close to birds that are usually quite nervous and timid. We had a beautiful sunny day therfore an  opportunity to take a lot of photographs, I am looking forward to getting back to the Green Goddess and checking them out, to see if any are of value. After four days touring, I am really looking forward to opening the show tomorrow. I shall be at the SECC first thing in the morning opening the Scottish Caravan Motorhome and Holiday Home Show and I am looking forward to meeting fellow Club members and show visitors.
