Post it from Camping Prumtal, Oberweis, Germany. Tuesday 28th April, 2015.

This story happened on: 28/04/2015

We set off around 9 a.m. which was a fairly early start for us and headed the 224 miles towards our next intended destination, all by motorway apart from the last 10 miles to the campsite. I had heard that the Belgium roads were in an atrocious condition but to be fair we found them pretty good considering the recession everywhere. There were some exceptions but not many. We did suffer some hold ups along the way with road resurfacing slowing us down and the ring road around Brussels was extremely busy. All went well apart from a near miss from a German driver in Belgium who was travelling well over the speed limit and did not want to stay behind us as we were passing a slow lorry up a hill. He clearly could not see the huge lorry as he tried to undertake us to get past and nearly ran up the back of it! The journey on the motorway was not enjoyable though and I saw little of the countryside.

We stopped in Bitburg, famous for its beer and amongst other things Ronald Regan’s visit there in 1985, to refuel and collect fresh fruit and salad before heading for the camp site a short drive away. Although it was about 10 miles from the motorway we chose to stay here because it came highly recommended by DianneT from the forum and the restaurant reviews said it was excellent. We thought we would try our first German meal there see why Dianne liked it so much.

The campsite is set in a small village and has totally grass pitches running alongside a small river. It was well tended and cared for although recent rain had left the ground wetter, and softer, than I would normally wish for given our weight. There was no problems getting onto the pitch so hopefully getting off will be the same. It was a very picturesque setting and the almost new toilet and shower facilities were second to none. The staff were very helpful and spoke highly of Dianne and her husband when we said she had recommended the site. They offered us her favourite pitch!

The evening meal we had was in a very pretty and quite large restaurant that surprisingly had more than 40 diners which were mainly not from the camp site. We had local fayre and our main course of pork and beef tips in a leek, onion and beer sauce accompanied by green beans wrapped in bacon and pan fried potatoes called ‘Farmers Pot’ was described as a favourite Eifel Regional meal. All those reviews were correct, the restaurant and the food were excellent. Having had almost no alcohol since Christmas I pushed the boat out and treat myself to a Bitburger draught Blonde Beer and that was good too.

From reading some literature the camp site had given me when I booked in there was clearly a lot to see and do within striking distance of the site if you had a car. Luxembourg was only around 15 miles away and the Moselle valley was also quite close by, we cross the river at the old Roman city of Trier tomorrow morning. Perhaps on another journey we may stop longer and try and see some of the things the Eifel region has to offer.

Regards, Roy

Overnight at Camping Prumtal we had -1ºC leaving a ground frost and ice on our thermal screen covers. It was more noticeable when I discovered the electricity was being charged for and we had a bill for an additional 22kwh at 55c a unit. We do keep the van warm though especially for Smokee who suffers the cold badly, and us of course. There was no mention of the electric being metered when registering and there was no meter at the hook up point, not that we would have used less, but it would not have come as a surprise had we known.

The meal was very substantial Brue, we could not eat a desert.

Regards, Roy
