Post It from Camping Domaine de Marcilly, Marcilly sur Eure, Upper Normandy, France. Sunday 9th Nove

This story happened on: 09/11/2014

When we left Borges on Sunday morning there was some light drizzle but it soon stopped and we enjoyed a dry day, albeit very cloudy. Being Sunday the roads were very quiet as we made our way to Chartres to stay on the campsite in the centre of that historic city. We  have wanted to stop there on a number of occasions but it always seemed to be not the right time as we were close by so this time we made a definite point of including Chartres in our stops. We planned to stay two nights so we could have a day sightseeing and enjoy a good meal in the centre somewhere. It was also one of the very few sites still open and due to close the following weekend.

We arrived in time for lunch to find it closed up and all locked. It clearly had not been open for some days and I could not understand the answerphone message when I called. I quickly checked my ACSI App and found another site 30 miles away at Marcilly sur Eure, so I called to make sure they were open and set off after lunch.

This campsite is very large and set in woodland. The pitches are enormous, some as large as 400+ m2, but we settled for one that was much smaller and close to the shower facilities. We were only stopping the one night and were one of only 3 motorhomes staying there. Many of the pitches were occupied by permanent holiday homes including some very old static caravans manufactured close to where we live. The trees in their autumnal colours made for good viewing but this also meant a carpet of fallen leaves everywhere you walked and the night dew made it rather wet underfoot. The few lights on the site made it good for viewing the night sky but a trip to the facilities was an expedition, even with a torch.

Whilst we were happy here for the one night it was disappointing we had yet to stay in Chartres again and had we known we would have spent the extra night in Borges.

Regards, Roy

Oh well, you can keep Chartres on your list when you go back next time. Strange how some places remain on a list for ages!

Chartres is a lovely town especially in the summer when they have a light show around the Cathedral.
