Overnight at Camping Prumtal we had -1ºC leaving a ground frost and ice on our thermal screen covers. It was more noticeable when I discovered the electricity was being charged for and we had a bill for an additional 22kwh at 55c a unit. We do keep the van warm though especially for Smokee who suffers the cold badly, and us of course.

The sun was shining once again as we set off along the motorways and the days driving of 275 miles was a good lesson on German motorway driving. Like everywhere driving standards have diminished over the years but the German system of no speed limits for cars on most of the motorways ifs frightening when you see them doing probably in excess of 100 mph on a 2 lane motorway where the inside lane is chocker with HGV’s and the entry slip roads are far too short causing vehicles to move lanes on a regular basis. I can only say the brake pad manufacturers are quids in. At times I was horrified but enough of that.

The roads were largely of good quality but there is significant road upgrading taking pace and this causes slower traffic and for those heading north we saw mile upon mile of queues. Our only delay was a 30 minute one due to a broken down HGV, yes on a 2 lane motorway with no hard shoulder! Once again I did not get much of a view of the surrounding countryside which seemed very green and heavily forested in areas.

We made good time and decided to push on until I had had enough and we had picked a site as far as we wanted to drive in the day for our final choice for the night. We made it there by 1645 and Camping Christoporus was very welcoming. The ACSI reviews said how nice it was and welcoming the site staff/owners were. I can certainly confirm the lady at reception was very helpful. Her English was quite good but what was a very nice touch was another German camper coming to the rescue when she did not understand me.

The camp site is not far off the motorway but is quite isolated down a long narrow road which joins hamlets of houses to Kirchberg. It is adjacent a lake and I saw plenty of windsurf boards on the site which has a lot of permanent caravans of all sorts and styles. The touring pitches are all along a central paved road close to the entrance where all the facilities are in easy reach. Once again the site had what appeared to be a well-used restaurant and a surprise facility was a sauna which was also used by the locals. There were around 600 pitches in total and with the exception of some very old and tired looking permanent touring caravans it looked well-tended.

Ready for a few days rest now we have decided we shall look to find a nice site in Fussen and spend a few nights there to do some sightseeing and catch up on a bit of relaxation as well as much needed exercise. Though I doubt we shall be starting the ‘travelling’ programme our gym trainer gave us before we left home. We shall save that for warmer days and swimming pools!
