Post It from Camping Chateau des Tilleuls, Port le Grand, Picardy, France. Monday 10th November, 201

This story happened on: 10/11/2014

With having a fixed train time for crossing the Channel we had ample opportunity to make plenty of overnight stays on our way to Calais and decided to stay here for the night. Having missed out on staying at Chartres we would have stayed here longer if we could have accessed Abbeville easily but there was no public transport to get there and because the road outside the site was so busy and quite narrow the site owners did not recommend walking into the village where we could access the canal, which stretched from the Baie du la Somme to Abbeville, to do some walking. So we decided to just stay the one night and move on t our final destination at Wimereaux the next day.

This site is set around a Chateau with some trees that are 100 years old. It has been a farm in the past and the new owners are making large renovations to bring it into a modern camping site. The site is terraced with some static caravans and bungalows as well of plenty of touring pitches and a couple of those tents in the air, I cannot recall what we call them back home but they are called ‘Cabanes dans les arbres’ or treehouses here.

The facilities included a large pool, gymnasium, outside play area and good use was made of what looked like chicken sheds for other games under cover and the toilet block. Whilst looking rustic they were all fine for our purposes. The reception was ultra-modern and our hosts were excellent and very helpful. There was a library room and free internet access from the reception and the library.

It was perhaps very apt that when we leave on Armistice Day we shall travel down to the Baie du la Somme where we would pass close to one of the Great War battlefields and then along the coast towards Boulogne. There seems to be plenty to see and do in this area but you really need a car.

Regards, Roy

Roy

Many thanks for continuing to post such interesting and informative stories, together with excellent photos! We have enjoyed following your trek round Spain and Portugal and back to France. Easy to see the contrast in the weather as you have headed back up North! Hope you have an enjoyable last few days on the continent before heading back to wet and windy Britain!!

Thanks Colin. Last story will come tomorrow from Wimereux. Very windy at the moment as we look out over the Channel & watch the shipping & a very faint Dover.

Roy, it was useful to know where you stayed prior to your return leg of the adventure.  We are commencing our first overseas trip on Sunday, so appreciate your comments and now have a target for our final stopover.

kind regards,
