We had a similar problem with our car last year heading down to Dover and the Ferry (not towing & petrol engine). The light came on and we limped a bit then went of again. We reached St Omer for an overnight stop and next day we travelled 300 miles to Beaune without a problem. However, after a stop for Fuel at Intermarche, the light came on again, flashed and then the engine stopped with a smell of burning! One of the coils had burnt out and was replaced by a local garage. We then had a further two weeks of motoring without a problem. We made the 800 mile journey home, but the light came back on a week later!! We had damaged the Lamda sensor by driving with a dicky coil - an expensive bit of kit to replace. If you're driving a diesel, all of this is irrelevant of course

I did not say my discovery is a 2.7 diesel auto.

We had a similar experience towing with a Freelander, we lost power towing through the Lakes and SW Scotland. We talked to Landrover and limped home after the holiday. We had all the checks done too, nothing was found and we had no further problems. As Chasncath have said try putting this in the CT towcar section for further help.

Yes we had the same problem with our new Freelander in October also on the M6.

We limped home and landrover recovery came out and after attaching the laptop told me it was an ongoing fault on the new engines on the fuel differential pressure switch, he downloaded the updated software (2 mins) and it hasn't done it again.

We had the same on our 2.5 Diesel automatic Series 2 Discovery - It had many trips in to the dealer who could never get it to reproduce the fault - they ended up keeping it for 3 weeks and changed various pieces - cost me over £1000!  Needless to say I have now got rid of it.  Never did find out what the problem was.  Also had problems with the automatic selector and was told how to re-set that.  Park up, switch engine off.  With selector in DRIVE, push lever to top, down to bottom, back to top, back to bottom, back to top, then to Neutral.  Re-start engine, and should be re-set.  A pain, but again, had to have a new selector fitted (under guarantee thankfully).  My mechanic said they are brilliant cars, but VERY VERY costly as parts are usually OEM only - even my refurbished ABS joint was around £900 - new was £2000!  eeek!  Now tow with a Volvo V70 2.5T Auto - excellent, and tows like a dream!
