cooker fallen out of housing.

This story happened on: 23/01/2014

we have a swift charisma 2011 model and following a recent trip away we returned to find that the cooker had fallen out of its housing during our return travel home. This caused a lot of damage to the cooker and surrounding caravan interior. We took the caravan into our main dealer where we purchased it from new in the hope that the warrenty covered the damage . However after ten weeks of waiting for a decision from Swift they have stated that they will not take any responsibility for this . The cooker was held in by four very short screws , not even a safety chain was attached we find it amazing that this is not required on a caravan yet in the home this is a safety requirement. Has any other members had a simular problem?

That’s amazing! I have not noticed any movement with ours in the MH. It is a bit poor about Swift's response, I guess they take the stance that because it is not happening all the time then it was down to the journey? I hope you manage to get it all sorted out satisfactorily. Regards, Roy

Looking at your photo I think I would persue the dealer/swift through the small claims court.  You should expect in a caravan that the fixture and fittings installed would be serviceable and secure even after a couple of year.  Under the sale of goods act the cooker was not fit for purpose.  Swift may decide that it would be worth repairing/replacing and some compensation rather than the potential of reams of bad publicity.

Ironically the Swift range is one of the caravans we thought looked good and reliable. Your experience is a timely warning and now we'll start again. Are all manufacturers so quick to disclaim their shoddy workmanship?

I think you have a strong case under the Sale of Goods Act.  Check out your rights by looking at the web site but you should claim against the dealer in who, in the first instance, under the Act, is responsible for making suitable repairs.

We bought a new Stirling Europa in 2011.

The first year we had it the Cooker  came loose.

We then had a new Fridge fitted and that came loose.

The wall between the bedroom and the kitchen area also came away from the side of the van. All this work ws carried out by our dealer under guarantee

The best thin about that van was the trade in price we got last year when we changed it. Not for a Swift Group Van.

Redards warranties. We bought a 3 year old Autotrail motor home along with a 2 year Autoprotect Gold Warranty. This warranty covers nearly everthing [as long as nothing goes wrong ]

Had the motorhome 6 months when water started leaking through the roof. No problem we have a warranty !

Auto protect will not pay for repairs as the leak is caused by deteriation of the sealant and deteriation is not covered.

I asked 'what if it was a crack? '..This would be caused by 

a] deteriation  - not covered   b] neglect - not covered 

c] accident - not covered, claim off insurance

So what else can cause water ingress that would be a valid claim? No answer.

I read many ' horror' stories about Auto Protect and none have been good.

The dealer I purchased the Motorhome from is trying to get Auto Protect to reverse their stance. Failing that the dealer has assured me that they will do the repair at no cost to me, which is very good of them but what use is a warranty that will not pay out when needed.

I certainly would not purchase an Auto Protect Warranty again and would not recommend them to anyone.

I would contact local trading standards for the area the caravan was purchased from, your claim should be against the dealer not the manufacturer as your contract of purchase is with the supplying dealer, the purchase should be of satisfactory quality and I would suggest this was not, unfortunately with all caravans and makes they are very flimsy in construction (especially with regard to interiors they are style over substance in my view). I know you say it was held with 4 small screws and i assume screwed into very poor quality chipboard or mdf.  

Trading standards should advise you on your options and I would also suggest getting a report from an independant dealer on the cause of the damage. This would then help reinforce your case if you need to persue legal action.
