BREAKDOWN SERVICES ( MOTORHOME ) HEIGHT, WIDTH, LENGTH RESTRICTIONS.

This story happened on: 17/12/2013

So you have your M/Home and you're ready to try it out on U.K roads, if you're one of the unfortunate as a colleague of mine once was, you’ll breakdown, not a problem he thought, I’ll call my breakdown service and inform them ( thinking his other vehicle would cover it ) and when they turned up his M/H was too long for their trailer.

How many of you have been caught out by this, I must admit I was until I phoned the RAC and they informed me that my T4 coachbuilt compass calypso was within their limits.

Most of the UK breakdown services do have restrictions the RAC, AA and Green Flag all have a weight limit of 3.5 metric tonnes but I don’t know about the others, The RAC has a length limit of 18 ft and Green Flags limit is 24 ft the AA as far as I can find out don’t advertise their vehicle length.

The RAC do a scheme named “ Arrival ” which covers motorhomes and caravans exclusively for Camping and Caravaning club members but again are there limits to the H, W, L of vehicles ?

Of course the only real way to find out if your vehicle is covered is to ring your breakdown service and ask them, I think it’s the first thing you should do when your vehicle is roadworthy,

DON’T LEAVE IT TO CHANCE.

Hope this helps

Our Swift Bessacarr is covered by the Fiat Camper assist cover which uses the RAC for the third year and is based on it being a coachbuilt van. We are 4.0 tonnes and 8m long which seems to be at odds with what you have quoted above.

The problem we had, when our last MH broke down as we set off to go away, was not any of the above, but the distance the RAC would take it: that was quoted as 10 miles!  We were insured via CaravanGuard at the time, with the RAC answering the breakdown calls.  The trouble we had convincing them that the MH needed to go to the nearest Mercedes dealer, which was 3 miles over the magical 10 miles, as it was a Mercedes part which needed to be fitted, was very stressful.

That MH was 7.40m long and 3.9 tonnes, but that wasn't any problem.  Apparently the RAC will only take it to a garage within 10 miles, which was the first we'd heard about that.  The MD of CaravanGuard had to get involved first, before, 3 days later it was arranged that the MH was taken to the Mercedes dealer, all of 13 miles away!

I know, I know, there are certain Breakdown services that do offer for an extra price or a service which includes larger vehicles but all I'm saying is that if your new to camping lets say don't take it for granted that your car/van will cover you for a motorhome or caravan if you are too big, I should have put new to camping to start with........doh, I'll go bury my head in the sand...........I did put this in the new to category still never mind.......wish I never brought it up now.........walks away in a rejected mood......try another post when everyones forgotten me.......bye
