The fixed rooflight that wasn't !

This story happened on: 24/03/2013

Currently touring on the Costa Blanca in our Autotrail Miami. Whilst driving down the AP7 at a leisurely 50 mph there was an almighty bang and the overcab fixed rooflight lifted in the wind and took the closed blind up into the space above. Immediate application of brakes and pulled over. we manged to open the closed blind and found that it was possible to lift the whole of the fixed rooflight up off its seating. I managed to fit the awning securing straps over the top of it and secured inside the cab through the windows.

Proceeded at a slow 25 mph to a site.  The next day phoned Autotrail technical who confirmed that the fixing of this is only sealant with no mechanical attachments. With the help Andy, a local Motorhome Repair service (An excellant help on 00 34 653 705 597) we removed the light and cleaned of the old sealant, which had parted company with the perspex but was still attached to the roof.

It was obvious that the failure of sealant had occured over a period of time. This was evident from the 'shiny' surface, but of course had never been noticed due to location and colouring of the rooflight. With both surfaces cleaned and new sealant applied the rooflight was repositioned and this time 8 strategically place stainless steel screws applied.

The thought of the whole rooflight becoming airbourne at a higher speed breaks me out in a cold sweat, it would be worth checking if you have something similar.
