Visiting Orkney with a caravan.

This story happened on: 10/02/2013

A couple of years ago I took a tour of the West Highlands and Islands then across the top of the World before crossing to Orkney( which is an amazing place) with the van. There are two ferries to Orkney, one from Scrabster which is roll on off and the second, a shorter crossing from Gills Bay which is a relatively new catamaran vessel. I was not aware that you had to reverse onto it up a narrow ramp. I am reasonably competent  manouvering on a site, but sweated blood trying to reverse onto the ferry. For the return journey I chickened out and took the Scrabster ferry which is a bit more expensive, but well worth the extra for the peace of mind and lack of pressure. Orkney is a remarkable and very historical place and well worth the visit, just be aware of potential ferry issue.
