Damage Barton, Mortehoe, Devon

If you are looking for a Touring site with sea views and great facilities then you need to look no further than Damage Barton near Mortehoe in Devon. The site is affiliated to both the Caravan and Motorhome Club and the Camping and Caravan Club with each having its own area of the site set aside for members all with sea views.

The site has some of the best facilities we have come across on our touring adventures, with spotless individual wash cubicles and superb overhead showers, giving a true drenching (without the need to keep pressing the button). Facilities include a family bathroom, dish washing area, chemical toilet disposal and external wetsuit cleaning area, and laundry.

The shop at Damage Barton shop has recently changed hands after the original proprietors retired.  A young local couple are now running the operation, delivering a service both warm and friendly, offering a daily selection of fresh pastries, croissants, coffee, bread and local produce the shop is a great asset to the site. The selection of local jams and relishes are highly recommended and the Whortleberry Jam (small round fruit, like blueberries) not to be missed.

Damage Barton is a working farm covering over 580 Acres, rearing 500 sheep and 100 head of cattle the Farm runs a stewardship scheme maintaining the traditional Devon landscape of stone walls, Devon banks, Hedgerows and wild flower meadows. A gem of a site in a wonderful part of the country.

The site is set between Ilfracombe and Woolacombe with Barnstable, Saunton Sands and Croyde in easy reach just down the coast. A visit to the Saunton Sands Hotel is a good choice where you can enjoy a glass of wine and witness spectacular sunsets. The Hotels cliff top position provides a view along the length of Saunton Sands contrasted by the greenness of the rolling Braunstone Burrows, and the blue of the sea, On a Sunny evening, sitting with friends on the warm terrace with the sun dipping into the sea, it confirms life doesn’t get much better than this!

After a week in Cornwall in June when the weather was awful. The end of August gave us a wonderful week of clear blue skies, with spectacular sunsets. Having decided to stay an extra night to take advantage of the weather, our last night was truly awful, with gale force winds and heavy rain rocking the caravan resulting in a disturbed night’s sleep. It was also our first experience of packing away in pouring rain, just thankful we haven’t yet purchased an awning.

A Final word of warning if you are considering Damage Barton, make sure you read the access advice on their website and approach the site from Barnstable, turning left at Mullacott Cross Roundabout on to the B3343, follow road for 2 miles and turn right onto Mortehoe Station Road, (Do not use Sat Nav as this often directs you onto Warcombe Lane or into Warcombe Farm Campsite).  Mortehoe Station Road can be tight in places so choose your passing places and make sure you can proceed when oncoming traffic allows, enjoy!

Wow your photos do it justice.

Sadly sometimes we have to pack up in the rain 😢 and arrive in it 😂😂. I'd rather pack up in the rain after a good few days than in the sun after wet few days 😉

KP

What you have posted is a site review, albeit a very comprehensive one, but it is not a story and should really be posted in the review section for this particular site. The story section is really for what you did on your holiday, rather like you did with your excellent Portsmouth story, not really a place to review campsites unless Club Admin decide in the future to change the parameters for this section?

Thanks KP, enjoyed your photos and details  about Damage Barton. Haven't tried it ourselves but you've given a good account of your stay in the area. smile
