Latest Magazine and "Loose" wheels
This story happened on: 05/11/2015
Subject: November,s Readers Star Letter.
I was absolutely amazed on reading the star letter in November’s issue of the magazine.
I was even more surprised it did not generate an editor’s comment!
I too have been towing for over forty years, and a club member for over ten, and in every van I have owned one of the essential pieces of kit, has been the torque wrench.
This is used before every journey, regardless of how far that journey is going to be.
In nearly every instance of loose wheel nuts, it will be the nearside wheel that is effected, as the anti-clockwise rotation can encourage the nuts to loosen.
It should be noted there are always many references to carrying out regular checks in the various caravan magazines, and it is even item 2 on the Clubs touring checklist, see Page 633 of the handbook.
One other item that is of interest now most modern vans have alloy wheels, but a steel spare.
Make sure you have a set of compatible nuts for steel wheels, using the ones from the alloys can give rise to problems.
