Our Family Holiday Touring - Part Five

This story happened on: 03/09/2012

We're now in Annet-sur-Marne to the east of Paris at a site called Camping L'Ile Demoiselle. The kids have finally fallen asleep as tomorrow we're off to Disneyland.

The site is apparently only 12km from Disney itself. Unfortunately the train is not an option so we'll be driving the Bailey and parking there for 30 euros - I suppose that's not too awful considering we'd probably have paid just as much in fares.

I said we were heading from Annecy to Saumur on Tuesday. That should have read 'Saulieu'! We stayed two nights at the site there - again it was very clean, friendly and surprisingly quiet.

This morning we looked around the sleepy town and had coffee and croissants in a quintessentially French establishment - the Cafe Parisien. Other highlights were the tranquil basillica and stumbling upon an art gallery in a beautiful 15th century townhouse.

The drive to Paris was painless until the very end when Suzie Satnav took us to the correct postcode... at the back of the site where we were faced with a 50m long, 5ft-high, corrugated iron tunnel!

I asked a man who had just parked his classic motorcycle next to us if he knew the way to the main entrance. He thought about trying to explain but changed his mind and said "Follow me!" He climbed back onto his bike and took us down a number of twisty side roads, arriving at the site's front gate five minutes later. "Bonnes vacances!" he shouted and was off. What a top bloke - we'd have struggled to find it without him.

Well it's off to see Mickey and friends in the morning, before heading back to Dunkerque on Saturday. We've had a fantastic time - and it's all gone pretty smoothly. I was apprehensive about touring in Europe, but my fears were unfounded.

Stats - miles travelled: 1,392.5, croissants eaten: 43, motorcycle escorts to site: 1. Au revoir for now.
