First Time At Peterborough

This story happened on: 19/10/2015

This is our first season with a caravan and we have been trying out a few new locations through the caravan club network.

A couple of people recommended Ferry Meadows to us and we decided to spend a week in early October 2015.

We have owned cycles for many years but having just taken up kayaking last year we have spent most of our breaks getting on the water.

Whilst there appeared to be the opportunity to get on the water at Ferry Meadows we were drawn by the sixty miles of traffic free cycle ways afforded by the Peterborough Wheel and decided that we would take our sadly neglected bikes with us this time.

The site feels like it is in a forest in the middle of the country. With mature trees and surrounded by lakes, river and golf clubs there is an abundance of wildlife.

As it turned out we bought a Canadian canoe the weekend prior to our stay and so the bikes were pushed into second place once more.

A small launch fee gave us access to two lakes and the river Nene, which was crystal clear and full of plants and fish. From experience you cannot see below the surface on a lot of our waterways and to watch what is going on below was an absolute pleasure.

We also did plenty of walking and looking forward to bringing the bikes next time. There is an extensive network of cycle ways throughout Ferry Meadows alone and this is a five minute walk from the caravan site. Wildlife and water sports were plentiful as we took our walks.

Deciding to leave the car, for once, we took the bus into the city.  Ten minute walk to the bus stop and half an hour to the centre. We had a bit of retail therapy and visited the cathedral.

Missed out on the pitch and put and no time to go on the steam train we will definitely return to this site.

In fact we tried to get back for Christmas but it is fully booked so will be our first choice for next summer.

Ferry Meadows was the first ever caravan site we went to when we started caravanning in 1982. We have been back many times since. We previously had a small cruiser and went all the way down the Nene.

One of our favourite sites.   Our son has now moved nearby and so we have another excuse to visit.

Great hobby isn't it?  You get to explore our beautiful country and indugle in other hobbies.  What more could you ask for??
