A Cornwall Sojourn

We had planned our first trip to Cornwall some months ago and as the holiday drew closer we began to pray harder for some good weather.

Sadly, I think we all know what a damp summer this has been, however, as my old Sgt Major often assured me ‘Don’t worry, you’re waterproof young man’.  We decided to go regardless of the weatherman’s long faces and all the sad tales on the television and in the newspapers.

We made our way firstly from Waterlooville in Hampshire to Honiton in Devon staying at a delightful CL courtesy of Mr & Mrs Murray at Sundial Garden.  We were made most welcome and appreciated the owner coming to check that we had everything we needed.  I should mention that the homemade quad layer walnut and coffee sponge available from the onsite shop is to die for, quite scrumptious.

The following morning we setoff for the Club Site at St Agnes Beacon arriving just after 2pm, we’re leisurely travellers.  Happily, the sun was out and the Warden and his wife immediately made us feel welcome.  Having agreed a good site, I got the caravan sorted, awning up and thank goodness for a ready supply of tea!

Over the next week we had mostly good weather, only one day when rain stopped play.  We were able to get out and about visiting St. Agnes, Truro, Lands End, Penzance, Marazion, St. Ives, Trelissick Gardens and Perranporth.  We also tried some of the local walks and, of course, took in the view from the St. Agnes Beacon, all quite delightful and well worth visiting.

Apart from the stunning scenery I shall long remember two new friends, John and Maureen, our neighbours, and the heroic Warden who had to come to my rescue when I was unable to move the caravan due to the soft ground.  He truly was our knight in shining armour; his four-wheel drive was also very handy.  We are surely very lucky to have so many expert, cheerful and helpful wardens looking after us at the club sites, long may it continue.

All in all, we confounded the weathermen by having a most enjoyable sojourn in Cornwall, proved my old Sgt Major correct and shall report back later this year when we have been to Tintagel.
