Southern Austria Lakes and Mountains.

This story happened on: 06/03/2012

This is an area we have visited for many years before touring with the caravan and the last 8 years with the van.  It is a wonderful area where very few Brits venture to.  Austria must be one of the most picteresque countries in Europe.  The A10 Autobahn from Salzburg down to Villach is beautful and you travel through the Hohe Tauern.  At the Northern end of the Tunnel a new Service Area opened in May last year. You will see a photo of some of the wonderful food on offer here at the Landzeit Restaurant.

We stop on a site taking just 80 caravans/motorhomes on the shore of the 9 mile long Ossiachersee and as you can see with a wonderful view.  The campsite is an ACSI Camping Card Site and we found it in Caravan Euroe 2. we would rate it 5 star.  Facilities are excellent,  fresh bread every morning.from the shop/cafe.  In the cafe you can buy Tea, Coffee, Chocolate Beer, Wine,  Home made Cream Torte, and of course a wonderful Warmer Apfel Strudel with Cream and Ice Cream.  Fresh Pizza and other Snacks cooked on the premises.  Breakfast is not to be missed, we always partake of this the first and last mornings at the site and every Sunday in between.  Ham and 3 Eggs are my husband favourite.  website is www.camping-jodl.at

Many other Sees (Lakes) in the area Worthersee being the largest and the Millstatersee.  Many wonderful passes are open from about the 1st May and are open to take the car.  Maltapass, Nochalmstrasse and Villacherstrasse nearby with three also nearby to cross over the Karawanken Mountains to visit Slovenia for the day.  Lake Bled is just 1 hour away through the other route,Karawanken.Tunnel for which you pay a toll. As long as you come off the motorway on the Slovenian end you will not have to buy a Vignette and can visit some beautiful sights in this country.  Of course you need a Vignette for Austria but it is not a huge sum for 2012 it is 8 Euro's for 10 days and 23.40 Euro's for 2 months.  All the money for these tolls goes to the organization named ASFINAG and every cent goes into the Autobahns in Austria.and very good they are too.  In fact all main roads and most side roads in Austria are excellent inclluding the Mountain Roads.

For more about this excellent Caravan Friendly Country go to my website much more to see in the different trips we have made there and a page on Austria too.

The cost of living is much cheaper in Austria than the UK well Food ,Fuel, Transport and Car Parking are.
