Return to the Peak District

This story happened on: 24/05/2015

When I delved into my records I realised that it had been 20 years since we last visited the Club site Blackshaw Moor at Leek. The predicted weather for our journey was not good but fortunately better than forecast. On arrival at Blackshaw Moor our choice of pitches was limited as most of the higher pitches (away from the road) where taken so we made do with the section in front of reception. We have been on sites with more road noise but can understand why the lower section is the last to be used!

On friday we took the bus into Leek which is a rather nice, mainly Victorian, Market Town. The large War Memorial dominates one end of the town. Apparently over 400 sons of Leek were killed as a result of the Great War. Leek has a lot of long established shops which gives extra character to the town.

The next day we took the bus to Buxton. It is a superb run over the moors to the Spa town. Buxton is not quite so intimate as Leek but perhaps is grander with the Baths and associated building and large hotels.

We rely a lot on public transport whilst on campsite and we were rather concerned that a bus service at three hourly intervals would be a bit useless but the opposite seemed to be the case as between services allowed just enough time to explore and, of course, time for a coffee.

Sunday and Monday the weather was damp and chilly so we did not do much. Although on the Monday we did walk down to the Three Horseshoes for a meal. Portions seem very large, so much so we could not even manage a desert!!

This was our second trip out since Margaret's operation and I have to say she seemed much more comfortable on this trip which is encouraging.

Nice story David. We visited the Peak District in April using Buxton CC site as a base. We also visited Leek and thought it a lovely little town, a good market on a saturday.

Hi David glad to hear you enjoyed a good break and that Margaret would appear to be making good progress. You will be back across the Channel soon I'm sure.
