Away at Last

This story happened on: 05/05/2017

It’s been five months since we last went away in the van. I suppose as we get older things are more likely to conspire against us. Just after Christmas Margaret started to suffer from severe pain in her shoulders and neck. The conventional wisdom was that it was osteoarthritis but several visits to the physio and various pain killers plus acupuncture seemed to do no good. More tests and it looks increasingly like Rheumatoid Arthritis. Margaret has an appointment in June at Bedford hospital where hopefully they will be able to find something to ease the pain and help her get back to normal.

Those of us that use our vans on a regular basis tend to get a bit stir crazy when we can’t. So with some trepidation  I managed to persuade Margaret that we should try a few days away in the motorhome. We only went as far as Moreton in Marsh so not so far from home. Given that it was only 52 miles it seemed to take an age but it was across country and would you believe for part of the way we were held up by a fellow motorhomer who obviously found it difficult to get much above 30 miles an hour! Since having the motorhome we have changed our route compared to when we caravanned and now travel via Aynho and Adderbury. The last time we travelled this way we stopped at a lay-by just south of Adderbury and discovered a chap selling coffee from the back of a three wheel Italian Ape, he trades under the name Buzzy Beans!!! He was still there this time so an opportunity for a nice coffee. Highly recommended if anyone is passing.

We eventually arrived at the site to a jolly reception from the wardens resplendent in their new colours. Just a shame the site signage does not look as good. The site was already fairly full as we made our way round the site to find a pitch, eventually deciding on one we had passed earlier.

Saturday was our first full day on site and despite the dull weather we walked into Morton in Marsh. It always seems busy here with cars jockeying for the limited number of car parking spaces. We walked up to the station where you can get trains to Oxford or Worcester. Time for a coffee and we had plenty of choice as almost every other shop front seemed be a tearoom or coffee shop. We decided on Mrs T Potts Tearoom ( subtle ah!) Have to say they had excellent scones. Having finish we made our way back to the site as Margaret was a bit exhausted.

Sunday, what a beautiful day and we sat out most of the morning although I did have a walk round the site taking photos for my website. Thinking we couldn’t be lazy for an entire day we again walked into Moreton. En route, and not far from the site entrance, is the Wellington Aviation Museum. We have passed this many times but it has never been open but today it was. Perhaps calling it a museum is perhaps too grand. But it has an interesting collection of memorabilia connected with wartime and the Wellington. The man who set the whole thing passed away recently but it is still being run by volunteers. The man that took our entrance fee said that he didn’t think the museum would survive if it was not for people from the campsite. Margaret was keen to try another Mrs Pott’s scone so we continued into the town for our refreshments.

Monday and time to go home. No stopping at Buzzy Beans this time although I was tempted to hoot as I went by but resisted the urge! The last time I filled up with fuel was five months ago so I thought I should fill up just before we got home. Our local Tesco has room to get the motorhome in but alas no diesel so that will have to wait until next time. Whilst it was a bit of a struggle for Margaret at times I think even she would agree that it was a success. So much so she suggested we book a few more days elsewhere.

Sometimes it is better to take aches and pains away David than to suffer at home. That has been my experience on occasion.

Glad to hear you both got away. Moreton looking as good as usual. Must look out for Buzzy Beans if travelling over that way! smile

Really pleased you both enjoyed your break.

Buzzy Beans sets up and sells coffee at the Adderbury Community Food Market too, well worth a visit, next one 15th June 6 pm.

Mrs K has her crocs on again! It's good to get out and about, even if it's not far from home.

In-line photos too!
