Willingcott Club Site August 2005

This story happened on: 05/04/2012

Whenever we go caravaning you can guarantee that we get a member of the wildlife brigade join us in the awning.  One year which was particularly memorable was the year we visited the Willingcott site near Woolacombe.  August 2005 was a very busy time for the site, and we bagged the last available spot on the site.  It was another beautiful summer, apart from 1 or 2 days.  We had a little ABI Marauder 4 berth caravan, which was beginning to seem small - a bit like a tardis now that our sons were growing taller and taller.  Therefore, we decided to get a sleeping compartment for the awning, and our boys enjoyed 'sleeping outside'.  This sleeping compartment had an integral grounsheet. One morning our eldest son asked his father to take a look at the air bed, as he felt it was coming down.

My husband lifted it up and noticed an almost perfect circle of grasses woven together (he didn't realise that it was woven until later).  So he investigated further.  There was a squeak and I don't know who jumped highest my husband or the fieldmouse who had taken refuge from the recent rain.  The fieldmouse had chewed another perfect hole in the groundsheet and made a nest.  I suppose he or she was also attracted by some of our food as well as the shelter.  My husband did a wonderful repair job with the help of some duct tape, and the groundsheet was as good as new.

That was also the holiday where we both vowed we would never have an electric kettle.  One of the children on the site managed to pull the kettle onto themselves and the air ambulance had to take the poor child to hospital.  I always donate to that charity.

Whilst we were there we saw a display by the rescue services and watched a monster truck/car demonstration.  We enjoyed the quite countryside
