The Beer Stalker – Black Horse Farm, 385 Canterbury Road, Densole, Kent

This story happened on: 11/06/2013

Black Horse Farm site marks the start and the end of holidays for most members as it is just a short drive away from the ferry port of Dover. Many members use it purely as an overnighter which is a pity as it is a neat and tidy and well laid out site that rewards a longer stay.

There are so many cute rabbits on the site that I almost convinced myself that I had a walk on part in a new Watership Down movie! I shouldn't forget the plump and friendly wood pigeons either. It all adds to the pleasant rural feel of the site.

The site is divided into two distinct areas. The early departure area for members who have early ferry sailings. This allows these outfits to depart for the sun without disturbing the sleep of those slumbering on in the main part of the site.

The main part of the site has generous hard standings in the main with some serviced pitches for members who enjoy a touch of luxury. Additionally, there is a nice area of grass pitches for those who enjoy the feel of green velvet under their feet!

The early departures and regular campers both enjoy their own washing facilities which are of a high standard and include dishwashing and laundry facilities.

I have experience Black Horse Farm in thick snow and more recently in the busy holiday season. The contrasts are remarkable as you might imagine. In June the wardens perform a logistical miracle every day – every morning the site is almost empty but by late afternoon there is often not a spare pitch to be found! The wardens perform this transformation every day in a seamless operation that certainly doesn't disturb longer staying residents.

As I said, it is worth lingering at Black Horse Farm for a day or two just to explore the surrounding area. A very frequent Stagecoach route 16/16a bus service operates to Canterbury and Hythe and Folkestone right outside the front gate. The fascinating towns of Sandwich and Deal are but a short car drive away. The delightful Victorian seaside resort is certainly worth a visit as are Ramsgate and Margate for the contrast alone.

Turn left at the site exit and a mere 3 mile drive will bring you to the small village of Denton and the pretty, easily found Jackdaw pub. This is Beer Stalker favourite when staying at Black Horse Farm as it is open all day and it also serves a good Sunday lunch.

It has a large, well surfaced car park divided into distinct areas. The pub is warm and cosy furnished in “country pub” style with two large bars and a separate restaurant.

It is possible to eat in the bar if you prefer a more relaxed dining experience. The food is imaginative and changes regularly and normally features a specials board. Service is attentive rather than fussy. The prices are very reasonable for this part of Kent.

This is a free house so cask beers are liable to change. Each time I have visited there has usually been a local Shepherd Neame beer from Faversham and an Adnams beer from the Suffolk seaside town of Southwold. Often, there is another guest beer. Most times a draught cider has also been available. If, like me, you enjoy well kept real ales or traditional cider then you will find something to enjoy at the Jackdaw in High Street, Denton.
