Tree Story

This story happened on: 25/05/2013

We shot down the Peage from Calais to the Cote d'Azur with only two night stops to rendezvous with our grandsons at Camping 'Domaine de la Bergerie' near Frejus. It's not an ideal site for motorhomers because there are lots of low-hanging trees and access is difficult. However, we're here to see the boys who, with their Mum & Dad, are having a mini-holiday in a mobilhome.

The weather here is sunny but very windy. So windy, that last night that reception called us on our mobile to say that a tree was about to fall on to our 'van. We'd just finished our BBQ with the family at their mobilhome at 9pm, so it wasn't what we needed!

We had to reverse our 'van off the pitch while the tree surgeon cut the tree down: it was now getting dark and Chas had a sense of humour failure. A small crowd gathered to watch the tree being felled. After it was all over, we were left in the dark to get back on our pitch.

Chas swung our motorhome back into our emplacement in one easy manouvre which ripped the back bumper off! Next morning with a bit of hacksawing, drilling, superglue and penny washers some semblance of order was restored.

All morning, our Belgian and Dutch neighbours plied us with offers of tools, materials and beer to help fix our bumper. They've also been back to admire Chas's handywork!

We're leaving tomorow. It's a great site, but not for motorhomers - too many low tree branches.( a few caravanners having problems as well). Don't know where we're going yet but that's the joy of motorhomingSmile

We were not looking forward to manoeuvring off our pitch and then avoiding both the low-hanging branches and a giant pothole on the exit route. We asked for some of the branches to be lopped with no real expectation that it would be done.

Next morning a man with a chain saw arrived in the elevated bucket of a JCB. He carved his way down the alley lopping everything in site! All this arboreal carnage just for us?

Then a tractor appeared towing a large 'mobilhome'. Sad to say, the mobil home was immobilsed when its wheel fell into the pothole, broke the towing arm, while getting stuck between a tree and a dense hedge. In the confusion, we drove off the site ignoring the one-way system.Happy

We're 20 mile west now at La Croix Valmer, but that's another 'story'.
