Postcard from Krk

Krk is the main town on the Croatian island of Krk. The old quarter has narrow stone –paved alleys, with an abundance of restaurants and souvenir shops. All the historic buildings bear plaques in English as well as Croatian. The town’s harbour is shared by pleasure craft and working fishing boats: there is also a small boatyard and a diving school. Small cruise ships call in at the pier, but connection to the mainland is by bridge. Ferries leave for Cres and Rab from the jetty at Valbiska, just a few miles north.

The principal activity in the area is tourism; however, the region is famous for the quality of its olive oil, and there are two sign-posted routes from the town wall to find different varieties of olive trees. The shortest ‘walk’ is about 10Km and can take 3 hours, so we’ve decided to leave that for another year!

We’re at Camping Ježevac which is just a 10 minute walk along the seafront to the town. It’s a big, modern campsite with modern facilities and direct access to the sea. Although it’s low season now, we’re paying 30€ per night for a ‘Premium Mare’ pitch by the waters’ edge. The ‘beaches’ are mainly concrete platforms on top of rocks. The sea is typically crystal-clear and deep. Be prepared to swim among shoals of fish, but swimming shoes are essential.

We arrived on Monday and the southerly wind started blowing. The sea got up, cancelling any swimming plans, and then a thunderstorm lashed us for most of the evening. We shared a bottle of wine indoors with our chums, Jeanne and Graham, with whom we had ‘rendezvoused’ for a couple of days.

Tuesday morning the wind died down and the sum returned; Cath had her 8am swim; we all walked into town and along the cornice; we had two rounds of ice cream, and then returned for an afternoon swim. Today the sun is out, but the awning is in!  Stronger winds are forecast, meanwhile here are some photos.

Well, here I am again enjoying your travelogue! We are having a rather water logged time in GB so seeing the sun on your pics is a relief, nearly forgotten what it looks like.

Red sky in the morning.....

Southerly wind set to strengthen!

We awoke this morning before dawn with the waves crashing ever closer to our van, and the wind getting stronger. The forecast didn't look good and our 'van was getting drenched in spray, so we decamped a couple of days earlier than planned. We're now on a sheltered pitch at Kamp Njivice, 12 mile up the road, awaiting the storm, but only paying 14€ ACSI rate.

We were in Krk a couple of weeks before you, Sept 4 - 8 2012, at Campin Pila at Puna, across the bay from you.  A lovely island. We then went on to Split and Dubrovnik.
