Postcard from Cres

This story happened on: 10/09/2012

Cres is a charming small Italianate town on the Croatian island of Cres. It sits at the head of a deep sea-loch which links it to the bay of Cres. (Creski Zaljev). The town has a pier for visiting yachts and small cruise ships, and an inner harbor for small fishing boats. There is also a large marina from where the ranks of expensive yachts and cruisers seldom seem to stir.

Around the harbor and pier are grouped the cafés, shops and restaurants which, with its narrow shaded alleyways, give Cres its stress-free charm. By day, the pastel coloured buildings and the bobbing white boats make a picture. By night, the street lights and those of the quayside restaurants, reflect in the dark water to provide a perfect spot for dining out.

The weather here at this time of year is a balance between hot sun at mid-day and cool evenings. Plus 30 is the maximum, dipping to 20 by night. The sea is crystal clear, as is the sky at night. It’s quite amazing how many stars you can see.

A promenade follows the narrow shingle beach to the headland where it passes in front of Camping Kovačine. We’re on a terraced pitch about 60 metres from the sea. Through the pine trees, we can watch the cruisers and yachts as they pass along the deep water channel, and can hear the fishing boats at night as they putter out to sea. We’re a short walk from the steeply sloping beach area and Cath has managed to have three swims a day including a pre-breakfast dip at 8 am!

Camping Kovačine is a large but well managed campsite. The facilities here include moorings for campers’ boats (the Germans bring their own), a ‘dog beach’, a shop, bar and restaurant. It’s now getting into low season here and the most sought-after pitches nearest to the sea are becoming available daily. The reception Staff are very helpful and will allow you to move pitches without fuss or cost.

'Late Summer' has changed here to 'Early Autumn'. Mother of All thunderstorms last night with continuous flashes, high winds, and a deluge - so awning wound in and chairs and table lashed together! More sunshine on the way; meantime, swimming suspended.
