Our Saturday Outing to A Coruña

This story happened on: 06/09/2014

We're at Camping Los Manzanas above the town of Sanata Cruz. Across the bay is A Coruña ( La Corruna to us Brits). It's famous as setting off point of the Spanish Armada, and for the the Battle of Corruna in 1809.

We set off this morning by bus to the city. The rain cleared away and we caught another bus to the old town. We had 'dos cafes solo' by the seafront.

and then headed to the Jardin de San Carlos and the tomb of General Sir John Moore who led the British to victory over the French in the battle of Corruna , but died during the fighting. His action allowed the bulk of the Army to withdraw to sea.( It was a bit like Dunkirk).

Moore is one of Chas' heroes, so it was a 'must visit'. ( despite the General having been a Glasgow High School FP!)

Next we looked around the old town and the Praza Maria Pita, where we watched the wedding crowds and listened to Galician bagpipes.

After lunch for two at Burger King (4.85€), Cath made a new friend.

Another bus took us to the oldest Roman lighthouse (200 AD) still in use, Torre de Hércules,

some ice cream, and a trip along the longest promenade in Europe.

p.s A big 'Smartie' for anyone who can quote the first two lines of 'The Burial of Sir John Moore'.

Not a drum was heard, not a funeral note,                          As his corse to the rampart we hurried;

Well that's my Sunday morning  "improving" session completed thanks to the Oxford Book of English Verse.

That must be some long prom then. I really do like this format for the photos but it means extra work I guess uploading them to a host first. OK if you have a good connection. Regards, Roy

Sad Ooh sorry my quote didn't line up. The views of Corruna were great, the Roman lighthouse looks fascinating.

Well done, Brue ! We used to read poems like this in school in the last century.

By the way, there are 234 steps inside the lighthouse to the top - we passed on that!
