Our Day Trip to Venice

This story happened on: 05/10/2015

Having left Croatia a day early when the wind dropped and we could cross the Krk Bridge to the mainland, we realised that we had an extra day to fill in our revised plan.  As we were passing Venice it seemed daft not to stop and have a day trip to the famous city. We stopped on Friday night at Camping Della Serenissima at Oriago. www.campingserenissma.com. It’s an ACSI 16€ site and the bus to Venice leaves just opposite the site entrance every half hour. The fare is 3€ return.

The bus crosses the causeway to Venice to the bus terminus at the Piazzale Roma. From there you can follow the signs through the alleyways and across canals

to the Rialto Bridge and the Grand Canal.

and then the Piazza San Marco.

We first visited Venice 33 years ago with the ‘kids’ when we didn’t have to queue for hours to visit the Basilica: changed days.

We walked along the waterfront taking in a view of the ‘Bridge of Sighs’

and more domestic  views before having a pizza lunch on the less busy Castello district.

Having been on our feet for several hours

we decided to take the Number One ‘ Vaporetto’ back up the Grand Canal and back to our bus.

We passed under the Rialto Bridge which was wreathed in scaffolding and sheeting for renovation.

Venice deserves more than a one-day visit, but this was our fourth so we can be excused for just having a quick day trip. Our top tip would be to buy a map at the campsite when you buy your bus tickets. It’s easy to get lost in the small alleyways and to miss the ‘must-see’ sights.

It's on our list to visit, didn't realise it would be so easy with the motorhome.  Looks busy even at this time of year.  Half wondered about a visit for my BIG birthday in February but temperatures not encouraging, even though Carnival was.  You're both looking well and relaxed.Laughing. Use left and right arrows to navigate.
