After a recent return to our much loved northern border country where we lived for a few years we decided to revisit Berwick on Tweed and actually take a look at the famous old town itself. We stayed on the CC site at Spittal which has magnificent views over the Tweed towards Berwick and out to sea at Spittal.
Even better the weather gods were with us although we mis-timed a view of the Northern Lights by a a few days and that would have been the proverbial icing on the cake!
There is a very short walk from the site down to the sea front at Spittal with it's industrial heritage, good old fashioned promenade, sandy beach, cafe and park. Just a bit further south of Spittal the geology of the area comes into view, worth exploring for rocks and fossils. One thing worth noting is the story of the painter L.S. Lowry who enjoyed staying in Berwick on Tweed, his paintings are depicted on display throughout the area. His paintings can be compared to the actual views and we enjoyed finding the boards and seeing the different views. Many have remained unchanged.
Taking a walk over the old Tweed Bridge into Berwick itself was a worthwhile experiencee and the town has many lovely buildings, especially when viewed from the town walls. these walls are still intact after hundreds of yeras and can be walked and enjoyed at leisure, dropping down into the town or coast en route. This where my story must end but hopefully from the included photos a few glimpses of what we saw will come to life. The photos show a view from the CC site. A view of Spittal and L.S.Lowry's view. A Lowry view of buildings that have remained virtually unchanged and a self portait of the painter himself in his late thirties.
Berwick on Tweed, in the sunshine, a first for us and worth the journey too!
