OAP Olympics

This story happened on: 29/04/2012

Back in March I wrote about Themes, and how we caravanned with a theme for each group outing and said that our next theme would be the Olympics. Well the event has taken place near Much Wenlock birthplace of the modern Olympics with teams representing Wales, England and France. What an event with six ageing caravanners in singlet and shorts staggering between caravans and taking part, albeit not too energetically in a variety of sporting events whilst liberally supplied with excellent food and copious amounts of alcohol .

We started a torch lighting event prior to commencing the games with boules and moved on to the aquatic event i.e. a plastic duck race in the stream running through the site. The field events, archery with plastic bow and foam arrows with sticky suckers, javelin again with foam equipment, shot put with feathered foam bombs followed. The highlight here was the competitor who hurled the shot a record distance but sadly backwards. The event finished in the indoor arena with darts and skittles. The latter in my case resembled the Battle of Waterloo with the ball hurtling waist high down the alley almost decapitating the event judges.

The medals, see photo, were brilliantly crafted by my sister in law, a fellow caravanner but not a participant in the games. Medals were awarded on a team basis with Wales taking the gold, Team England the silver and Francais the bronze. A trophy for the games Victor ludorum was awarded for the outstanding competitor.

As you can imagine onlookers were somewhat bemused and amused by the event, whilst we competitors had an hilarious time. I’m sure many of today’s younger generation would be shocked to discover oldies can enjoy themselves in such activities.

Our next event is a tea party to celebrate her majesty’s jubilee. We are all looking forward to letting our hair down yet again, metaphorically speaking as we don’t all have any!
