Red Pennant, don't leave home without it!

This story happened on: 27/06/2013

We regularly holiday in Europe and have always taken out Red Pennant insurance and until last summer never had cause to use it. We were travelling through France en route to the Dordogne region when the automatic gearbox on our car began to play up.

We tiptoed the last 20 or so miles using the tiptronic function and set up the caravan. The following morning a short test drive showed all was ok but I didnt want to risk getting stranded on the way home.

I called Red Pennant and gave them all the details and a return call an hour or so told me that the car would be picked up the following morning and taken to the nearest Mercedes dealer for investigation. As we were with friends we did not need to take up the offer of a hire car so as promised a flatbed truck came to the site promptly at 8:00 and took the car away.

A couple of hours later I had a call from Red Pennant to say that the agent was unable to look at the car until the following week so to avoid any complications they were sending out a replacement car for us to use for the remainder of the holiday and to get our outfit home .Within 48 hours a very pleasant young lady had delivered an immaculately presented Hyundai Sante Fe and collected our car from the agent to take it back to the UK.

Upon arrival in the UK we were contacted to arrange for our car to be returned to us and the loan car collected.

Throughout the whole event Red Pennant were polite, professional and took all the stress out of what could easily have been a traumatic experience.

Well done Red Pennant and the Caravan Club.

We had occasion to use Red Pennant once when we had an accident in France in our motorhome.  They were wonderful.  One phone call from us and a breakdown truck arrived to take us to the nearest depot where we were advised to ring Red Pennat again when they arranged a hire car and accommodation in a Logis for us.  They then phoned us every day to keep us up to date with events.  A breakdown truck was dispatched from the UK with a Nissan xtrail for us to drive home in and then took our motorhome back to England. They were wonderful - calm, reassuring and professional and took all the stress out of the situation.  We would never travel abroad without Red Pennant.

I had a similar experience this spring when the clutch went on my Volvo V70 on a Sunday afternoon, in France, in a small village, on a hill at a stop sign about 5 km from the Castels site near Limoges. One phone call to Red Pennant and within 2 hrs were were on site having been taken there on a truck. The guy driving the truck arranged for it to be delivered (by him) to Volvo Limoges the following morning. It was looked at after a couple of days but nothing was done so after a couple more days, perhaps the same young lady - Annette I think she was called from Star Leisure arrived wiith the Santa fe and took the car back to the U.K. It was delivered back to Taunton Volvo where the loan car was swapped. Absoluely brilliant. Just a word for the help we had from the campsite; Castels Le Chateau De leychoisier they were brilliant too - although arriving on a Sunday afternoon fora plan of three days the boss man who lived in the Chateau adjacent said arrangements would all be sorted out when a recepionist who spoke English arrived the following day. Well when she arrived I had some difficulty with her accent - broad Lancashire - a she helped sort out necessary things like getting some food. In fact we set off to walk the 3 km to the shop but were picked up by the boss in his Range Rover and taken to the local supermarket for supplies. Everyone was just brilliant and made a difficult time much less stressful.

Red Pennant - dont leave UK without it.

We are shortly to take recovery of a new Fiat base motorhome, covered we believe by Fiats camper assist for 2 years.  As we currently have an annual Red Flag European cover policy we were pondering not renewing this.  However, a few hours internet research has shown significant failings in not just the Fiat cover, but those offered by other recovery agencies. So, following on from the above very useful comments we have decided the not inconsiderable outlay for Red Flag is well worth the extra cost if only for peace of mind.

But why do they charge for each person who may possibly on occasions travel in the car?
