A Scottish tour.....

This sounds great - what are the site prices like in Scotland, much the same as england..?

Yes I concur, There are some wonderful scenery along the west coast and a chance to do some ' wild camping' and walking unlimited.

We spend May/June in the highlands each year but by Campervan, which I believe is the ideal transport. A tour with some toing and froing will take 1500 miles, maybe 350 to Sterling each way for starters from the Midlands. Diesel outside town supermatrkets will probably be £1-55 per litre this year. The further North you go the narrower the roads and in many cases single track with passing places. Large outfits beware and slow is the norm. Plenty of commercial sites at about £15 per night. Quality is very variable and CL's sparse.From late May the MIDGE can be a problem. plenty of inhibitors. If like me you fish a full head midge net is essential.Motorcaravaners in particular can have some spectacular wild camping being fully self contained and light until midninght.Favourite places, Kinlochewe, Gairloch, Scourie, Durness and the whole top coast to Wick. If you only go once then dont miss Skye, but if the mist  is down you might. Appart from start date we make no plans as you will invariably be distracted or in my case find a new remote loch.

Agree with all comments.  Probably fuel costs will be even higher after the recent increases!  I recall paying £1.44 for diesel nearly 4 years ago in Scourie - but worth it for the chance to get to Sandwood Bay and Cape Wrath.  And with quieter roads you get a higher mpg when driving solo.. Site fees are very comparable.

We are doing this trip in two weeks time, but has anyone got any routes for walks from Altnaharra that don't go too high !!
