Shortened stay.

We were booked here for 7 nights in mid-May and received a very friendly welcome from the young ladies on reception on arrival. We had booked an extra large serviced pitch and were allocated one of the largest we have ever been on, 140m2 to 180m2. All pitches are on grass with small hedges and trees between. Bear in mind ‘fully serviced’ often means shared tap and waste points in France as in this case. I always carry a ‘splitter’ however for the water thus enabling a private supply direct to the caravan without inconveniencing a neighbour. As we only use our own facilities I cannot comment on the toilets/showers. The pool didn’t open until mid-June so we didn’t use that either but it didn’t appear to us to be very attractive and seemed totally overshadowed by trees. The advertised shop wasn’t open; bread etc being purchased from reception. The bar and restaurant were fully operational and we enjoyed a very good evening meal there with excellent service at reasonable cost. This is a pretty area dissected with canals and waterways and is best appreciated by boat, cycle or on foot. The short walk to the local village of Coulon is a must and has boat and cycle hire and a number of attractive restaurants. The nearest town of Niort was a disappointment with little to recommend it to us but we enjoyed a day at La Rochelle which is altogether more vibrant and interesting though something of a one-way system nightmare to negotiate. We are not cyclists but there are many cycle routes throughout the waterways and being essentially flat they are ideal for both on and off road cycling which many on site did. The weather was disappointing with frequent rain showers making the already soft pitches wetter and so having booked to stay 7 nights we cut short our stay and moved on after 5 having done most of what we set out to do.

Best French site we’ve stayed at.

I have no hesitation in recommending this site. The grounds are lovely the facilities great.Pool area excellent.Site bar and restaurant very busy and we were told the food was good.reception staff excellent. We paid for a larger than normal pitch with water and it was huge. The area is great for cycling and visiting the small town of Coulon a must.Gondola and land train rides aplenty.

A delightful site

This was a lovely peaceful site in mid June. I could see why a lot of British motorhomers and caravanners return. The location is good, pitches decent sized & staff very helpful & friendly. Nice canal walk into Coulon in the rain. We wished we could have extended our stay so that we could catch the bus into Niort. Definitely one we will return to.

Why not a 5 star

I’m overall this is a good site. Their were just a couple of niggles for us to drop a star. 1. Petty perhaps but my wife and I were disappointed with no hot water in the wash basins. The showed were fine. It was only the hand basins. I dislike Dhabi g in cold water. 2. The shop was poorly stocked. Saying this, I would like to say that we would go there again.

A delightful place

This area is a delight: canals and rivers everywhere. Really recommend a boat trip to appreciate the incredible canal system and wildlife. Pitches were generous in size, restaurant useful rather than gourmet and a friendly bar area. It was very hot whilst we were there so a cool dip in the pool was a must. Coulon is a lovely little place with a small market on Sunday morning.

Has everything for a great stay

La Venise Verte really has everything on site or within a 20 minute walk for a really great stay. The pitches are big, the site was busy but really peaceful. (September 2020) . Facilities: shower block, toilets and dish washing facilities are very clean. The outdoor swimming pool looks great with a relaxation area available. A takeaway menu is available if you don't feel like cooking or there is an on site restaurant that offers great value for money. The steak and chips is delicious and the pizzas are huge so great if you are hungry. Nearby: The small village of Coulon is a short walk away with an outdoor market on Sunday mornings. A small cafe does a great chicken and chips and a ham salad baguette. The Tour de France rode through the centre of the village in September 2020. This is a great site and the reception staff gave us some advice on where to find a good vet for the passport signature and the supermarket in Benet is within a 10 minute drive.

OK for cyclists and walkers

We stayed at this site with friends in late June early July. It is easy to find if you follow the clubs directions and do not go through Benet. On our arrival about 1pm,we found the reception to be closed for lunch but on their return the staff were very helpful and friendly and although they had allocated our pitches we could change them if we were not satisfied with them. It was a really hot day, 39/40 degrees and with luck our pitch was shaded by the trees but our friends pitch had very little shade. These were super pitches which were very large so we could position the van near to the water taps and drains which are shared by the 2 pitches. There are separate shower and toilet blocks which although kept clean we all felt they needed a lot of updating, the pool was inviting but not that big and although you can order bread etc the night before there is no shop. We used the bar a few times but found that the restaurant had only one 3course menu choice that changed daily so we never used it. The area is ideal for cyclists and walkers with lots of trails along the canal banks etc but we found that if you don't do either of these there was very little to do in the area apart from going into Coulon or La Rochelle which is about 45min drive away. On one afternoon the young gardener trimmed the hedges between the vans but did not remove the trimming until the following afternoon leaving quite a mess to avoid.

Lovely location

We arrived on site on World Cup Final day - much anticipation for the French! The pitch allocated was flat; approx 10m x 15m and offered plenty of shade from the hot weather (much needed) and the water supply and drainage were straightforward at the rear of the pitch. At the time of our stay French schools were out and so, the site was busy with a fair mix of young families and older couples which made peace and solitude less likely (our choice of dates - we will not make that error again)! We would with hindsight, have been better off with a pitch to the rear of the site away from the kiddies play area. There are also a number of chalets on site which were probably in use up to 40% capacity. The bar was a little pricey - but the restaurant was reasonable with their modest menu.Facilities were clean but as the site became busier, could have been benefitted from a second cleans per day! This region is quite different in that it is in the Vendee with lots of waterways across these flat lands. Walking to the pretty village of Coulon is to be recommended where inland boating prevails and visits to the Cities of La Rochelle and Niort are worthwhile. In addition to this somewhat surprisingly, we spotted a pair of Kingfishers and a Coypu at or in the river near dusk on more than one occasion.

Water and Drainage

Great site, will certainly return. Be aware although advertised as each pitch having water and drainage the location of these facilities is at the front of some of the pitch and you'll need extra long piping to reach the drain. Also the water is shared with the next pitch and you'll need a two way water tap attachment if you have mains water to the van/aquaroll.

We were allocated a fairly small pitch, bit tight but space for awning. Lovely restaurant. Good facilities. Friendly. Nicely situated for cycling.
