I booked this site late in the year it was not my first choice ,but i am glad the club suggested it as it was a great site with nice pool and plenty of space for my kids to play ,the pitch was a good size and we will be returning in the future as there is a lot in the surrounding area that we did not see we would reccomend this site to friends

Excellent one night stay

We spent an unplanned night here and were delighted to find that they had room for us. This is a lovely neat site next to a small lake. The manager was very welcoming. We were given a good-sized pitch separated from our neighbours by a small hedge. The restaurant on site served simple but acceptable dishes. The site is ~15km from the nature reserve of the Briere National Park, where there are fantastic bird-watching possibilities. The nearest town to the site, Pontchateau, contains some impressive religious statues / calvaries.

Great site for families

I have never left a comment before, so it must be good! What a little gem of a site, a charming French retreat. The site was quiet, clean and thoroughly charming. The toilets and showers were clean and plentiful, with never ending hot water. The pool was a pleasant surprise, especially on the second day when they pulled the roof back. The restaurant gave us a much needed break from cooking, with freshly prepared French food ( and pizzas for the children). The staff were all friendly and welcoming. We will definitely be visiting again :)

Lovely Fortnight

We have just returned home after a lovely couple of weeks (10th - 24th July) at this site. The only negative I would raise relates to the general maintenance of the hedges and trees. Some areas were in need of a trim so if you are looking for a site where the pitches look as though they have been manicured you will be somewhat disappointed. However, it could be argued that this more "natural" appearance adds to the rustic charm. The toilets and showers were always very clean, showers are free and hot water was plentiful. On arrival we were given tokens to use in the dishwasher - one token per day - and although we did use them frequently we did not find them very satisfactory and used to wash our cups and cutlery in the caravan. The site is very peaceful and pleasant and we made good use of the free pedalos on the lake. The restaurant, which is in a section on its own near the swimming pool, holds themed evenings (Paella, Mussels and BBQ) on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and is open to locals as well as site users. We did not use this but they seemed popular and caused absolutely no disturbance to those of us on site. If you like pretty villages then visit La Roche Bernard (15 minutes) Rochefort dur Terre (50 minutes) and Pornic (30 minutes). The nearby village of La Calvaire is definitely worth visiting. Take time there to reflect on the various scenes depicting, in life size statues, the experience of God's Son Jesus at Calvary. Overall we would certainly recommend Chateau Du Deffay to couples (it is quiet and restful) or to families (there are good amenities for children).

Just one word of caution - if you use the Snooper Sat Nav (Caravan Club edition) don't select the site address fron those offered via the Sat Nav as it will take you to a place about 3 miles way.

Sadly Disappointing

We have just returned from a week at Le Chaponnet followed by a week at Chateau du Deffay.  We expected the sites to be quite different, but not as different as it turned out. Le Chaponnet had a very mixed clientele, in terms of age and nationality.  It also had a buzz and vibrancy that was great, and we are sure to visit again. Chateau du Deffay is very different.  Around 3/4 of the caravans and motorhomes were from the UK, which was a real shock,  The site has the feel of a Caravan Club site.  This is good because we like Caravan Club sites; it is also not good as we didn't come to France to stay at a Caravan Club site. Finally, the croissants from the site are not that good and were quite greasy.  The ones from the local LIDL were much better and less than 1/3 of the price.

Croissants are Excellent.

Lovely quite site in French countryside with friendly English speaking staff. The site is on a slope falling towards a lake but the pitches are pretty well level, some with full facilities. The toilets are pretty good but remember you are in France. The lake is lovely with resident Otters and Kingfishers so nature lovers will be happy. The croissants provided at the small shop are excellent so if your not careful you will put on weight, like I did. You wont be sorry visiting this site just be aware it`s down a narrow country lane so passing might be a challenge, but I`ve been down worse. Did`nt visit restaurant  so can`t comment.

Two week visit

We arrived at Chateau du Deffay camping on 20 June and stayed for two weeks. Our pitch was a "special" one which was by the lake with electric and water hook-up. The site was quiet in the main but at weekends there are weddings at the Chateau and campers are warned about possible noise on the Saturday night. Also over the wedding weekend the chateau grounds are out of bounds to campers. There is occasionally noise from people staying in the chalets on the opposite side of the lake where the wedding guests stay. This is slightly annoying as it was around 5.30 am shouting, running about and using the pedillos on the lake waking lakeside campers. The area is very good for beaches, chateau, museums and other cultural activities. All the main beaches have swimming areas marked and lifeguards on duty at various times. The site staff are friendly and very helpful. The on site restaurant has a limited menu choice but the waitress is very helpful and keen to ensure that you enjoy your meal. Bread and pastries are ordered and paid for a day in advance in the shop. The manager even helped us to rearrange a vet appointment for our dog in case we were delayed on our return journey at Calais. We would use this site again and liked the area.

June 2015

This was our first trip abroad and we were really pleased we chose here. The owner Dominic was extremely helpful as we have quite a large outfit and he  gave us an excellent pitch. The site was very relaxing and you did not feel over crowded. I would have no hesitation in recommending here to couples or families, probably more suited to young families. Lots of great walks and cycling.
