An excellent site in the East of The Netherlands

We thoroughly enjoyed Camping de Papillon with its laid back feeling and would heartily recommend it to anyone who wishes to have a relaxing time in the east of The Netherlands. There is an excellent network of well signposted cycle paths throughout the area, which we at times made good use of. Though the site was quite large it never felt particularly crowded, with ample space to move and relax. The pool was busy, but never overcrowded. There is also a swimming lake with a tethered inflatable iceberg to throw yourself from into the cooler water; very popular with younger teenagers. Throughout the site there were also under-10s size play frames and slides. We found the restaurant served excellent ice-cream at a reasonable price, as well as ice-cold beer and a decent range of food, and though the menu was in Dutch and German, we did manage to work out what everything was with a little help from the staff, who all spoke much better English than I did Dutch. The shop was fairly comprehensive for one on a camping site and covered all the usual, such as wine, beer, fresh bread, snacks, cheese, meat and a range of tinned supplies as well as fishing gear, camping spares and children’s holiday toys, all at a reasonable price. There was also a laundry. Camping de Papillon is a large site on the eastern edge of The Netherlands, less than half a km from the German border. It has around 400 pitches split into various fields. There was a mix of touring fields, including one that had a fishing lake in the middle so you could actually indulge in some angling direct from your pitch, as well as what appeared to be seasonal fields and some long term static vans with beautiful, well-kept gardens. Some fields have pitches separated by trees and hedges and some were no-drive fields, where cars are parked at the end of the field after pitching the tent or caravan. We had a comfort pitch approximately 13 metres by 12 metres and this was typical of the comfort pitches on the site. The pitch was level and had 10 Amp mains connection with the usual blue plug as well as direct connections for each pitch of fresh water and waste water. We were issued with a metal key for the tap on checking in at reception, 5 Euro deposit. We were also issued a card for the car to exit and enter, another 10 Euro deposit, as well as a card to be used to switch on the showers and the hot water at the washing up sinks in one of the two utility blocks. This was loaded with 350 credits for our seven night stay, the idea being that you would use less water in the showers as the site owners are very keen on their green credentials, having just been given an award. We would certainly visit again.
