We usually come here every November for xmas shopping. Its a 10 minute walk into town. York is full of nooks & crannies. We never tire of it. There are loads of shops. Well known shops and many independent shops. Plenty of places to eat & drink, to suit all budgets. If you leave the site by the rear gate and walk up to Bishy rd, you will find a great fish & chip shop, + Thai, Indian & Italian eating houses. Plus more independent shops. The river is directly out of the site and Rowntree Park is next door. If its culture you want then there's stacks to do. Enjoy.
