July 2018 Trip To Wirral Country Park

We have just completed a 10 night stay at the Wirral Country Park and the following comments might be of assistance to anyone that has not stayed there before. Location: the site is in a wonderful spot on the Wirral and the views, walks and cycling from the site are just lovely. Grass pitches are in the best locations and don't rush to take the pitches that overlook the estuary as these may not be the best ones to choose. Toilet Block: This should be raised to the ground as it is truly awful. Toilets rock around on the floor because they are loose, the showers are run down and have dreadful water pressure, and the gents never smells clean and fresh. Mirrors are old and not so clear or bright any more and the old brown floor tiles are particularly nasty. This part of the site completely let it down, so much so my wife and I showered in our van most of the time. The caravan club need to take a lesson from affiliated sites such as Love2stay in Shrewsbury or the CCC site in Teversal. Knock this block down and start again. Washing up area: Reasonable and this is about all that should be said. Water is blisteringly hot though which is good. Dogs: This is probably one of the worst sites for making dog owners feel persecuted. Expect to see lots of signs saying dogs must not be walked on site, and god forbid they wee or poo anywhere other then off site. Whilst there will always be a minority of dog owners that do not clear up after their animals, and let them bark at anything that walks past their unit, not every dog is a bad animal. Shame of the club and this that carry out the rules for blatantly making dog owners feel like second class citizens. This is not the first MHCC site that has adopted this stance. Access: No great problem with access but the last section into Thurstaton can be a little tight if two caravans meet in opposite directions. Arrival: Do not try to arrive bang on or before 12:00 as there will be a long queue and there is precious little parking except on the main access road. Wardens: Ian and Sue are lovely and I am sure the new assistants will also be great to work with. Shopping: 3.5 miles to West Kirby where there is Aldi and Morrisons. Beware the asking cameras at Aldi as the customer has to tell the system they have left the store or face a £70 fine. I was caught twice with this during my stay as I did not notice the single computer terminal in store that has to be used when you leave. Activities: Great walking and cycling on the Wirral Way Repairs: Lots of electric hook up poles that do not have working lights which is a problem at night in certain areas. Tranquility: Great but probably not so good around the children's play area Overall opinion: Lovely location, lots to do, but an awful toilet and shower block.

Firstly I wasn’t aware we now belong to the MHCC, I thought it was The Caravan and Motorhomes club or has another name change been thrust upon members that we were not made aware of. As for your  comments on persecuted dog owners, the club has rules for dogs on sites which seem to be ignored by a considerable percentage of dog owners. These include keeping dogs on a short lead, (regularly ignored) keeping off other people’s pitches( regularly ignored ) and using the dog walks ( regularly ignored). I have in the past had my awning urinated on by someone’s dog, grass pitches contaminated by faeces with only a half hearted attempt to clean it up which I find very annoying as I like to walk round my van barefoot in dry weather on grass pitches. On a very recent trip to Plymouth Sound site a considerate motorhomer  allowed his dog to foul the grass near our van despite the entrance to the dog walk being nearer. I am not anti dog, I have owned several in the past. when we started caravanning we decided not to get another. My message is,  stick to the rules  and  you won’t be persecuted. If you don’t want to do that, leave your dog in kennels.

Shame of the club and this that carry out the rules for blatantly making dog owners feel like second class citizens. This is not the first MHCC site that has adopted this stance.

Hopefully all CC sites uphold this policy. If it unacceptable to you then use other sites although most doubtless feel the same as CC

I don’t recognise this site as being the one I visited a week ago. The reviewer’s points about the facility block and signs bear no resemblance to my findings.

The points about dogs and their irresponsible owners are, of course, a reflection on who was on site at the time, not of the site itself.

I think the toilet/shower area must have been updated since this post; We visited mid June 2021 and they were not as described. Toilets were secure, there was no smell and the shower pressure was excellent.

Regarding the dog issue. We are dog lovers but not dog owners, and from the number of dogs on site, they were most definitely welcomed. The problem is owners who let their dogs foul the site - especially the grass. Dog owners please remember that dog urine kills grass and dog poo is difficult to completely remove (though some don't even try; leaving the site staff to clean up after them (and they try so hard to keep the place looking clean and attractive). An added danger of the dog fouling is that small children play (especially on the grass) and may become ill from residual dog mess.
