Fantastic refurb, in the main. Wonderful wardens, in the main
Morn Hill has been a favourite of ours for many years - though it was dated, the facilities were always spotless. The lower site is now all hard standing - this is understandable as it means the top site can be closed in the winter and the bottom site remain open, but it was a bit disappointing to have no grass on the bottom site.
Given our preference for grass, then, we chose the top site for our visit in early September. There's some remaining damage to the ground caused by the upgrade, but that will disappear, I'm sure, by next summer. The new facilities blocks are stunning, but in the male facilities there are only two toilet cubicles (along with, I think, 2 or 3 showers and a couple of rather pointless cubicles for washing). Two male loos for over 50 pitches (including some tents) is inadequate and actually fewer than what was here before. So, there's a bit of an early race to get in there first thing. Not ideal.
Aside from that, our stay was excellent. We were lucky to be checked in by the wonderful Marion and Elaine, two Scottish ladies who were the life and soul. Nothing was too much trouble, and we enjoyed every interaction from a cheerful "hello" when we passed to a lengthy explanation of the excellent "inclusive bathroom" on the lower site. What a wonderful idea. What a wonderful pair.
We were also lucky with the weather as it was mainly dry, and we had a lovely several days. We only encountered the site manager once and, I'm afraid, the experience was not great, especially when contrasted to Marion and Elaine. Officious would be one word. I could use others.
Overall, we loved the refurb. However, the new prices are eyewatering and will limit the number of times we'll be able to afford to visit.
