We had a very nice non awning pitch on gravel hardstanding, when we stopped with our MH a week ago. I would have preferred one on the rails, the car park bit, but we we couldn't get it level without using ramps.
We have stopped previously when we had a caravan. On that occasion we had an awning pitch. They are all grass and many are not overly long. Particularly if you have a TA, or as in our case the toilet compartment is on the rear and there is a fence behind.

The site is run by the cc on an arrangement with the race course as are other race course sites,so the club are at the behest of the race course owners as to what can be done in respect of improvements .
We have stayed on Cheltenham racecourse a couple of times and as others have stated the best spots are at the lower end by the rails or on the higher part of the site on the smallish grass area that can take an awning,
It is a great place for visiting the area with the park and ride adjacent, and a nice walk for dogs and to the GWR station

If you compare Godrevy with Chapel Lane the difference is also unbelievable. So what? Sites differ and we either like them and use them or not.
Personally, I like Warwick and the tarmac pitches by the rails are great. I also like Uttoxeter although it is different. Each site has its own characteristics.
