San Facs are disgusting

Site was Okay. Made very welcome by staff. However the San FACS were in a disgusting state. The ladies shower was littered with blood soaked tissues.

Amazed what a busy town Thirsk is.

Only a handful of pitches have any view of the racecourse and buildings, mostly it’s a field surrounded by a fence with no particular view. So, not quite the atmospheric surroundings the Club photos might suggest. There is a dog walk which is a strip of grass at the back of the car park. Not an issue for us but seems cheeky to say it has a dog walk. The toilet/ reception block is very dated but clean and functional. The motorhome service is split into a fresh water tap near the entrance to the site ( which is easy to overlook) and a grey water disposal point nearer to reception placed by someone who has almost certainly never even seen a motorhome. The site badly needs more fresh water points and another elsan point - there is one at the far end of the site. There is a fair bit of road noise - if you have a pitch backing onto the fence then you have either a main road or the service road to Lidl behind you. The central pitches aren’t marked in any way other than the marker pegs as it’s grass so there is a wandering line of units and a couple of the pitches have fire safety points within their space - you have very little room but great if you are very worried about fire I guess. However, very handy for Tesco and Lidl and the town of Thirsk. I can’t imagine how you could park a motorhome any nearer to the town and even car parking in the centre is limited. The wardens were very friendly. I’ve never been to Thirsk before and it is quite interesting and I liked the James Herriot place ( memories of my grandmother who was a big fan). Amazingly busy town centre - not somewhere to go for a quiet weekend.

Good for walking access to Thirsk otherwise disappointing

Site is an open field between the racecourse and edge of Thirsk. Lacks any atmosphere. Significant road noise during the day and area close to Lidl noisy. Facilities are very cramped and tired (although clean). Easy access on foot into the centre of Thirsk (5 minutes walk).

Disappointed

Location- perfect, plenty to see and do within walking distance and train station within easy reach. Facilities- disappointing as no electric or toilets or showers on rally field. Toilets and showers on main site were dirty and very basic, not up to the usual caravan club standard. Our pitch was next to Lidl and was so noisy with deliveries, even late at night, 2330hrs so little sleep and during the day every single till announcement tannoy could be heard- this was continuous and very annoying. I do not believe that pitches should be so close to Lidl. The details given to us by warden on day after race day were inaccurate meaning that we were instructed to return to rally field at 8am ( the time we were told to return) . We didn’t feel that was safe as there was a continuous line of vehicles coming from the field back to the site down narrow Lane although this didn’t concern warden who was rude and proceeded to walk randomly around the field and clean windows whilst we waited, blocking site entrance along with many other vehicles until warden declared the site ‘ready’ an hour later - despite him not doing anything within this time to ‘ready the site’. - seemed like a bit of a power trip really. Due to the awkwardness we missed our pre- booked train which had significant implications for us. Thirsk is beautiful and has a great deal to offer only a short walk away.

Traditional campsite in town centre location

This is what I call a traditional campsite in that it is an all grass field laid out only with pitch markers. A few water taps grey waste and Elsan point. There are some very level pitches from the middle of the site to the front and slightly sloping pitches alongside the back fence. Thee pitches are large and you don’t feel hemd in. There is a small facilities area by the reception , old fashioned but fit for purpose and clean. There is no security barrier so site is open for anyone to walk/drive in so person security is required even more. You are required to leave the site and take caravan/motorhome to the rally field the day before a race meeting and return the morning after. Rally field does not have electric or toilet/shower facilities. We did this the other day and it worked well however the return instructions were not made clear and about 20 members were made to wait at the entrance car park as they returned at 0830 to their original pitches. Site manager said we could not go on till 9am as site was not ready. We all duly waited as nothing changed on the site. Manager came back 20 mins later and said we could now go the pitches. Seemed a bit odd and clearly there had been a lack of communication. The site is situated right on the edge of town with many pubs and eateries, plus the James Herriot museum , there is a large Tesco and Lidl right outside the entrance. Great access from the site to visit the Yorkshire dales and North Yorkshire moors and coastal areas. Peak season 7 nights cost £110 , which is a bargain for a site of this standard and location.

One of my favourites

2nd visit to this site and it was as good as the 1st. I had rang the week before to confirm earliest arrival times, sadly wardens did not call me back but I got info I needed from website chat. We had a choice of pitches even though the site was busy. We were told which way to pitch and did so, other units seemed to pitch how they liked. There are defined routes around the site for vehicular access but sadly one or 2 cars liked to shortcut between our unit and the van next to us, running over our ehu cable. I'm not going to say this or that could have happened because it didn't but I am annoyed at the increasing amount of couldn't care less attitudes of some people on club sites. We are getting tired of the small amount of disrespectful club members who don't think site rules are applicable to them! Rant over, the site is as well maintained as possible, lovely to look out onto the race course. Very short walk to all amenities available in Thirsk. Great dog walks around the local countryside. Love listening to the mid week Thirsk Fire and Rescue Pipe band practice. We will be back.

Loved this site

This was such a lovely place to stay. The site was lovely. It was back to basics in terms of facilities, but it was spotlessly clean and the wardens very friendly. The town of Thirsk is so lovely, it has inspired us to do a tour of Yorkshire. Do not be put off by the facilities.

Great location

If you want all the benefits of being able to have easy access to both supermarkets and town centre shopping and dining without the need of a car this site is great. The fact it is all grass pitches may not suit everyone but it was no problem to us nor was the need to move to the rally field for race day. The racing added to the holiday. I must also compliment the site team who could not have been better and more helpful especially when there was need to move to and from the rally field. A great value for money site.

Great site for local amenities

This is a great site if you want to park the car or van up and not drive again for a week as everything is in walking distance. Tesco and Aldi the other side of the fence and Thirsk town centre 5 minutes away. With ample pubs and restaurants plus a fish shop as well. Only issue is the toilet and shower process and it's not probably the sites fault as there following club rules to the letter. At the time of writing there allowing 3 in the toilets but if this is three in the showers then you could be waiting a while if you want just the toilet. I have been to another site that was using a different colour for the toilets. Added to this people staying on site who don't understand how the band system works. I was stood outside for 10 minutes as there was 3 bands on the hooks. I was getting desperate by this point and I thought I'd check, there was not one person inside. The site's need to make sure people know how the band system works. Moan over.

good and cheap but....

When the club say they manage this site for Thirsk Racecourse pay attention because if you are expecting it to be like other club sites you will be dissapointed, That does not mean to say there is anything wrong here it's just a few years behind, a bit like a time warp. The pitches are not organised like other club sites and only those on the inside are flat and level, not a big deal| One end of the site is literaly over the wall from the Lidl loading bay, not a big deal! The facilities are spotlessly clean but are more like an old sports changing room, not a big deal! Due to the amount of heavy rain the site was in danger of flooding, it didnt so, not a big deal, The staff are very friendly, resourceful and relaxed a very big deal!! A great site to visit as is Thirsk just read the description carefully and be prepared.
