one of the best sites on the network

Our first visit to The Firs and it won't be our last. I don't know why it has taken so long to find what is one of the best sites on the whole network (and I don't say that lightly). But before commenting in more detail on the site geography or facilities there is one "feature" which is superlative at this site - the wardens. Most do their job well but the wardens here are the most welcoming, helpful, friendly and hard-working we have had the pleasure of staying with. Turning to the site itself there are two distinct areas. We chose to stay in the upper area which feels more open. (There was an especially "private" pitch which happened to be free.) The site isn't too large (a single couple site for the wardens) and being divided in two makes each part feel generally compact. The pitches are well spaced and even when full over a bank holiday weekend it didn't feel crowded or cramped. Some pitches have wonderful views. However there are a few pitches by the road which would be better avoided if traffic noise is unwelcome. The narrow lane is much busier than one might expect. Most upper level pitches are untroubled by road noise and none of the lower level pitches are. The facilities are quite new and up to the standards of the best the club offers. Needless to say the wardens maintain them wonderfully. I cannot think of a single thing anyone could attempt to complain about at this site. I usually comment on running and road cycling from sites but because I was there immediately before a major race I didn't attempt much. I can safely say it is hilly - the site is at the top of a hill so any run (or walk) or cycle will end with an uphill on the return. Any exercise directly from the site will be quite strenuous.
