Nice getaway, ideal if you are active

We decided to take a punt and visit this site as we usually head to Hope Valley area, so glad we did The staff here were excellent and their advise on the local are was spot on, we ate at the Spanker Inn on our last night, which was excellent, We walked to Belper on the Wardens route but came back via the Derwent Valley Way to Ambleford then back to the site on a loop walk, excellent day out. Next day we cycled to Ridgeway then picked up the Cromford Canal and rode to Cromford Mill along the tow path, then cycled back ( caveat being that for the hill back up you need to be a regular cyclist or have an e-bike...but I'm 62 and managed it fine on my gravel bike) Views over the Derwent Valley are fantastic and the shops in Belper are decent too...... we cycled down and back to shop easily. We'll be back but maybe not until 2023 due to other planned trips for 2022

A fabulous site, will be back

Stayed for 3 days. As others have said the site and facilities are immaculate and wardens are excellent. Its a 45 minute walk down into Belper through the woods where there are lots of pubs, cafes and places to eat. We liked the Devonshire Pub (cosy character), Nourish (cool cafe/bar) and Elaichi a very good Indian restaurant (does takeaway as well). We used Steve's Cars a local taxi firm a couple of times (to get back lol) who were also excellent. We went to the Heights of Abraham one day 15 mins drive away at Matlock Bath which is a nice little town with a seaside type feel. Being lazy one evening we used the River Garden Cantonese in Belper who deliver to site (online or phone ordering) and the food was superb. There is a little road noise but nothing to bother most people, the road outside the site is pretty busy with no pavements so perhaps would not want to brave with the dogs (Wardens do recommend and provide maps for a circular walk though) or in the dark. Perfect for us and we will book to go back Spring 2022 :-)

Pitch Reserving policy seems to have changed this year

Been going to Firs for a few years now, but this season the warden on this site seem to be reserving pitches for 8mtr Vans, so gone are the days when its first come first served. We have 7.4mtr van, and just get whats left despite taking the afternoon off work to arrive on the site at dinner for first dibs at site. This never used to be the case, so all best pitches sit there while we get limited choice of pitch despite being first to arrive on site. No reason for it, as all pitchs can accomodate both 7.4m and 8mtr vans. Just come back from a weekend there as its great location and the warden had a bee in his bonnet about getting tyre marks on "his grass" and was quite rude. No need for it. He needs to chill out a bit, and remember people visiting keep him in work.

Nice site - great views - bit noisy if near road

Lovely site with great views and superb pitches at the back end of the site. I arrived late and had a choice of only two pitches - both near the road. One was dark the other OK but some road noise.Clean, tidy, well kept and very helpful staff. Belper is an interesting little town that has all the services you could wish for. Not possible to walk safely with dogs from the site as no pavement on the main road. That said there's a pleasant walk into town via the local cemetery nearby where this is plenty of parking on the road.

Lovely site in a beautiful location

Booked for a night in September for a stop over on the way to the Lincoln show. Having had an engine problem with our motorhome we were glad to be on the road again, however... Having been booked in onto a lovely sunny pitch we went for a long walk into Belper following the map provided by the warden (Alan). After a very peaceful night we were ready to leave when the engine wouldn't start again and we called the AA. They came and after a delay trying to locate one replaced the starter motor. We asked Alan if we could stay another night and he was very helpful and said it was absolutely fine so we had another peaceful night. In the morning we tried to start her again and no she wouldn't start and again we called the AA. Alan couldn't have been more pleasant, it was clear that if we needed to stay for a third night it would cause him a problem as the site was fully booked but he said not to worry that he would sort something out. As it was the AA got us on the road again and we carried onto Lincoln. This is a lovely site with beautifully maintained pitches and toilet/shower facilities that are spotless and a credit to the wardens. We will definitely be returning.

Spotless and peaceful

The site is lovely! Spotlessly clean; peaceful and has countryside to die for. There is also a great pub 10mins walk away! We will definitely be back.

Lovely site , busy road spoilt it a bit.

The Firs is a lovely site, beautiful countryside all around. The busy road spoilt it a bit for us, as we like to walk from our van it could not be avoided. The staff work very hard, and it is well kept & spotless. Very friendly. Many thanks for a lovely stay.

Fabulous site.

We have been back here a few times now and love it. Peaceful site and friendly helpful wardens. Very clean. Lots to do in the area for the whole family. Nothing to do with the site but wouldnt recommend nearby pub. we had a bad meal at the nearest pub the spanker. Really poor service and unhelpful staff, and food was not great. Wished we had used pop up gryos van on pub carpark as it looked amazing.

A nugget of gold

Our first visit to this site as a last minute booking and what a treasure we found. From the welcoming, cheerful and friendly staff to the beautiful setting that was our home for a few days. We have been on many sites across the country but this site has to be the friendliest and welcoming we have ever experienced. As we drove to our pitch we were waved to and smiled at by other residents making us feel very welcome. Nobody walked past our pitch and tried to pretend we weren’t there. A smile or a wave we’re enough to make us feel at home. The site wardens were so helpful nothing appeared too much trouble. The grounds were well maintained and the views were stunning. This has got to be a firm favourite for us and we will return. Thank you everybody who made a stay a delight.

Over and above.....

My husband Rob and I have not long returned from the Firs. A beautiful site, we were so looking forward to exploring the area but unfortunately my husband was bitten by a horsefly just as we were leaving home, but the leg didn't swell up until we were en route. On arrival Marie with her great big smile, was so welcoming and they both were absolutely amazing, helping us in our predicament. We spent the entire holiday going to and from the Royal Derby Hospital A&E for treatment. Rob even arrived back with syringes that had to be given daily and Marie very kindly gave them for me having experience. Anything we needed, she and Perry helped with. Add to all that our fridge broke too, so Marie lent us a cool bag and also freezer blocks which she would freeze for us as and when we wanted. The other campers were offering help too as they saw my husband hobbling on crutches. We are still not out of the woods at home but he is improving slowly. Our son drove up from Surrey to help me take down the awning, pack up and get our Fiat ready to tow back. So a huge thank you to Marie and Perry for everything, we can't tell you how much we appreciated it. The site immaculate, peaceful, with flowers and shrubs, the washing facilities are first class, we even sampled the disabled shower! We will definitely be back again next year - hopefully being able enjoy ourselves.
