Heaven on your door step

Our trip to Barnard Castle was a Hobson’s choice after my wife had only given me her work leave dates late meaning our usual choices to the south had all been filled for the weekends. So deciding to give it a go we wandered up the M6 turned right onto the A688 and after a two and a half hour journey arrived at the club site. Not bad for Saturday traffic. The wardens were friendly and helpful pointing out the pitches and suggesting that of the few that were left we might want to change it the following day when the camp emptied as the upper pitches tendered to get the road noise. How right she was. As suggested the following day we moved down to the lower section of the site which over looks the wooded ravine. The camp is well maintained and the usual standards that one expects of a CC site were present. The location is pretty central to a fair amount of local attractions and historical castles, cathedrals, gardens, pretty villages and manor houses. If you’ve not been to the NE before you are missing a trick, it is lovely. Barnard Castle itself is a delightful town to visit with many varied shops, cafes, pubs, restaurant and the lovely Bowes Museum oh and of course the castle itself. There are two walks to the village from the site, the short one is along the main road, cross the footbridge over the river Tees and up to the town or the longer route down through the wooded ravine to the said footbridge If you own a dog this site is perfect with the best dog walking area we have ever seen (bar Warwick Racecourse site) on a camp. If you’re a cyclist you will think you have died and gone to cycling heaven such are the brilliant routes to ride over the Yorkshire moors to Reeth or Hawes. The mark of a good holiday for me is how quickly the time passes. Sadly it seemed like no time at all when we were packing up to come home. We only scratched the surface in the week we were there so we will be returning soon. Oh and don't miss out on the wonderful Battered Cod fish and chip van that visits every Wed and Fri absolutely lovely food.
