Well maintained site
Nicely maintained site which has been significantly improved since CAMC have taken it over with new modern service block. Situated on edge of Stonehaven next to small village of Cowie and adjacent to open air swimming pool and beach. Stonehaven shops, beach and harbour all within a 15-20 minute walk and there are a variety of shops including a supermarket nearby. Walks along the beach / cliffs take you to the Highland Boundary Fault (north) and Dunottar Castle (south). RSPB Fowlsheugh a few miles south with puffins on the cliffs. Boat trips run from the harbour. Good eating places at harbour - Tolbooth Restaurant, Marine Hotel and the Ship Inn. Excellent touring base - Aberdeen and Banchory (Deeside) only about 12 miles away and good bus and rail links to Aberdeen.
Couple of negatives. It can be noisy - open air swimming pool open into evening and there is a weekly midnight disco. Also access road whilst a decent 2-way road is often down to a single lane due to the number of vans / motorhomres parked along the seafront so be prepared to have to reverse. Also (but hopefully temporarily) there has been a significant bird flu outbreak in 2023 along the Aberdeenshire coast and Stonehaven has been badly affected
5 night stay
This site is located in a great area, next to the beach and a lovely walk to Dunotter Castle. However this is the only site I have been on that I've known allow travellers. There were three different caravans located in the site and had dirty nappies lying around the vans, kids running around at all hours and children dropping there pants and urinating in the middle of the road . One family had a dog which had a wooden shelter out the back of the van. The dog was never walked, and never allowed in the van and continued to bark all throughout the night outside. The men from the vans would stand on the roadway chatting to each other. Spitting and very intimadating. Not sure I would return to this site due.
Noisy nearby swimming pool!
Suddenly very, very loud music started playing, we desperately searched to find the source, we asked someone in charge who told us it was a regular thing and it was coming from the swimming pool nearby! The staff member said that sometimes it can go on until late into the evening!! Luckily for us after a few hours it stopped.
Very good site but
We have just had a lovely week stay here loved it most of the time there, staff and site cannot fault well done you . However the music noise that comes from the open air swimming pool is not good when you are on service pitches 77/1/2/3 some days you could hear it in the harbour. Also noticed a group of travelers on site with a dog tied to a wooden kennel at the back of the caravan ?? . Do not recommend bathing in the sea or paddling due effluent , overall very nice site and a good feel to area will return one day
Great site, BUT
This is a very good site with all facilities well maintained by the very pleasant site staff. Short walk to town centre along promenade which has lots of seating, some cafes, ice cream shops etc. 30 minutes drive to Montrose which has one of the best beaches on northeast coast. Only drawback is open air swimming pool which lies immediately adjacent to site and has music playing most of the day, sometimes very loudly. People with low tolerance to noise should choose pitch beyond the toilet block.
Very satisfied
Excellent quiet location. Staff are very friendly and welcoming. Site is always very clean- no litter, no weeds in gravel, bins emptied, toilet block very clean etc.
Good for differently abled
We are 75+ with my wife coping with advanced Alzheimer’s. The disabled facilities on site are first rate and we were allocated a pitch quite close to them. The site was full on the two nights we stayed yet it was peaceful and didn’t seem crowded. There are plenty of seats along the promenade to sit and soak up the vistas around the bay or to enjoy the ice creams or freshly cooked seafood from the outlets within five minutes walk of the site.
Crathes Castle is less than an hour away and the June border in the walled garden was radiant with summer blooms - fully accessible again now that all Covid restrictions have been lifted. The on site café is ideal for light meals and (this week) to escape from the sun.
The open air pool next door is ideal for those who don’t want to brave the North Sea but we were not aware of any obtrusive noise coming from it while on site.
We hope to be able to use this wonderful destination for at least a few more years.
Excellent site with great wardens
I've had another three night stay at Stonehaven and everything is still up to it's very high standards. The wardens are superb at their jobs and make you feel very welcome. They are an asset to the club.
See you both on my next visit.
Fisrt Time Visit
This was our first visit to Stonehaven we had a lovely two nights , the weather was not the best but we still managed to walk to the Memorial and castle, the site was clean and well kept, the wardens were excellent as always.
