Return Visit

We like Steamer Quay very much and have made several visits here over the years. It's a small site in a good position on the edge of the river Dart and just a stroll over the bridge from the interesting streets of Totnes. Without EHU on site it's relatively quiet and pleasant. The grass can get a bit soggy in wet weather so take some mats or borrow the ones from the site managers. The Covid arrangements were good, the small facility block became unisex and either side could be for the sole use of a single person or family. We used our own facilities but rarely saw more than two people waiting at peak times. This year we did the walk to Dartington (beware the reduced opening times.) A good walk or cycle way with some nice riverside spots and a view of the Archimedes Screw hydro generator for some of the Totnes inhabitants. There is also a good cycle/footpath to the Sharpham vineyards. A local map is worth having to explore around this area. There are two shops for papers etc. in the nearby Bridgetown area of the site and many to choose from over the river in Totnes itself. Plenty of places to eat out too. Lovely walks into the Longmarsh parkland, just along from the site, past the jetties and rowing club.

Great location near river, small site, well run

Stayed 3 nights August 2020. Apart from new booking in process, a great escape from Covid-19! A small site, its location with the River Dart just over a quietish road makes it a very special place to visit. And Totnes is a relaxed little town with gentle, hippy style Advantages: 2 mins to walk to riverside; 5-10 mins to walk to Totnes with good range of shops, pubs etc; worth taking vehicle (1-2 mins) to park in Longmarsh car park at the end of Steamer Quay Road, about £4, literally next to the river with great park area and woods for dog runs and picnics; great wardens very helpful and friendly; dogs loved the site and area, not too difficult to walk them. Could be improved: EHUs needed (under review apparently) Didn’t use shower block at all. Would definitely stay again.

One of our favourites still

As the previous reviewer has said, Totnes C&MC site has it all - almost. A drive-over motorhome waste would be handy, but for the execllent location so close to the historic town, public transport, river etc, it can be forgiven a lot. It's such a pity that there aren't more like it. I think the site is not actually owned by the Club, but the local authority? Presumably a lease? We've just returned home from 3 nights there, a scorching weekend. The friendly wardens made us welcome (late bookers) for two nights on the limited hardstanding as there were no grass pitches. They seemed a bit apologogetic for the hardstandings, but it was fine and quiet enough. The only slight downside was their proximity to the arrivals spot. They'd come in and stop by the closed reception building, obstructing parking for the arrival of anyone following and ignoring the prominent notices instructing where to station oneself to announce ones arrival by phone and await the pack from the wardens. Most stopped and thoughtlessly left engines running. For our third night we were invited to move on to any vacated grass pitch, which we did. We didn't actually use the facilities block thuis time, and so cannotcomment helpfully upon using them in the current circumstances.

Superb location, well managed only let down by dated toilet block and no motorhome waste drain

We visited for easy access to Totnes which this site does brilliantly. I quick walk over the bridge and you are there. The site is easy to access from the main road and the arrangements around Covid 19 are well thought through. Although the site is along a road with some pedestrian traffic the site is very quiet. The staff on site were excellent. The only thing that lets the site down are the dated toilet block and the facilities to dispose of waste. There is no drain for motorhome or campervan grey water to drain away which meant driving to find a suitable drain. There is no facility to hook up which is fine, especially if you have a the latest solar power installed and sufficient leisure battery capacity. I would give the site 5 stars if it had a new shower and toilet block and the waste facilities were updated to make emptying a cassette toilet easier and allowing for the drainage of grey water.

Lovely quiet site in great location

Our first stay here, but already a favourite site. Great location in a lovely town, but still lovely and quiet in the evenings. Easy access to the River Dart for Kayaking and SUPing. Really friendly and helpful staff. Facilities although a bit dated were spotless. Will definitely be back!

Poor quality and not vfm

Stayed one night in late July, really to visit Totnes. Location is ideal but we found on the same street a large car park with 12 motorhome locations next to the river Dart and a riverside park. The site is very crampt and the single chemical toilet emptying site is basically a hole with a wooden lid to the sewers. No motorhome waste water empty point. The showers are tired and dated. We knew in advance about no electric hook up, so why is this site so expensive? Even with the reduced vat we paid over £20 for 2 people. The aforementioned car park was only £5 for the day. Come on CAMC this isnt good enough!

Almost perfect

Many people give this site 5 stars and it's certainly one of our favourites if not our favourite site. The location is spot on with relative peace and quiet yet everything you could want a stones throw away. The reason for 4 stars is a realistic appraisal of the site itself. The pitches - all grass are close together, the facilities clean but very dated and as a previous reviewer said the waste water empying point is a joke and has been since we've been going there. If you're Geoff Capes you'll be able to lift your container up to the ledge for emptying, not that the ledge is anywhere near the right shape. Come on CC how much does a bag of concrete cost for a ramp? Don't be put off though, this site is still special.

Not up to usual Club Standards

Visited in September. Wardens very welcoming and friendly and try to look after the site as best they can with the limitations they have. No EHU, but this is stated in the description, so we were aware. Small site, well maintained grass pitches, but all very close together. Old but clean toilets and showers, toilet cubicles very very small and toilets are very low, especially if you have limited mobility. Showers have hot water but are grubby as the silicone round the shower basin is black. Showers are in need of repair/replacement.Washing up facilities available. Close to town centre, so handy for shops.Limited recycling. - only glass. Waste water disposal useless, as too high to lift your disposal container up to. Road adjacent to site can be noisy. Take wellies as the area is prone to flooding.  To sum up, great location and wardens, but site let down by lack of investment by the Club for years.

Brilliant Location

My wife and I visited Steamer Quay in September 2019 for 5 nights. It is many years since we last visited when our family were very young some 30 years ago and very little has changed. That may seem to be a criticism but it is just brought back the happy memories of that visit. Yes, the toilet block is small and outdated but it is spotlessly clean, there is no electric hook up but it was nice to get back to basics a little bit and think of and manage our power consumption, spending time chatting and reading more, and there are very limited hard standing pitches. But we knew about all of these from the site details. The location of Steamer Quay more than makes up for the lack of amenities - there are many reviews listing many of the attractions so I won’t repeat them here but the accessibility to Totnes town centre with everything it has to offer, I think, is second to none! The wardens were helpful and approachable - the site was well maintained. It was wonderful!
