Great Location

Just spent a week here in early October. It's a large site and well located for all the attractions of the Island. Being late in the season, the site was beginning to close down for the winter and we found that many, probably most, of the pitches were out of use, either being rested, too wet to use or being re-seeded. The site is very well maintained with the usual friendly staff. So why only 3 stars? First, it came as a surprise when we arrived to be offered only a grass pitch. On every other Club site we have been used, there is a differentiation when booking between hard standing pitches and grass. With a large and heavy caravan our choice, especially late in the season would always be for a hard standing. Then, because of the closures and maintenance work, the only pitches available were a few that are designated as tent pitches. These are all along the edge, next to the dog walking area. So be prepared to be waken late at night and early in the morning by people taking their pooches for a "walk" and slamming the gate in the process. I thought that the number of service areas (fresh water, waste and chemical toilet disposal) was only just adequate and spaced far apart and the one large central toilet block, while exceptionally clean, looked to be inadequate when the site is busy. As it was, half the cubicles were locked out of use - which was a problem one morning when it was necessary to queue. Had I known that our standard pitch with awning was going to be a grass pitch, I would have booked elsewhere. I think that the limited number of hard standing pitches and the fact that you take pot luck on getting one should be made clear during booking and priced accordingly. In summary, not one that I'll return to

Sorry but you are incorrect. There is generally no opportunity to book pitches by surface type on club sites. Instead it’s a case of choosing from what is available on arrival. Southland is a bit unusual in having so many grass pitches and I guess the HS pitches were already taken when you arrived. There is nothing to make clear when booking as the system is general. If your unit is particularly large or heavy, you can always alert the wardens to your potential issues in advance.

If the wardens had taken some of the cubicles in the facility block out of use believing them to not be required at a quiet time, you could have asked them to open a few more.

I think Southland is a great site in a good location and well supplied with service points and other facilities. I found the wardens very friendly and approachable.

As TW states you cannot choose between hardstand and grass when booking with CMC.
