Disappointing

This is our second and definitely last visit. We were allocated a pitch right next to the bins etc. which was noisy because of people dropping bottles into the recycling container. The pitches were small and so when the people next to us had their mates round in the evening For two nights it was very noisy. The 11pm cut off time for quiet is too late and wasn’t adhered to. We asked to move pitches but were told no as they were full even though there were a few vacant pitches. There were no efforts to encourage wearing masks during the COVID pandemic, you’d have thought nothing was happening. A few signs up but sanitiser bottles were empty and no measures in place to stop too many people using facilities. Don’t attempt to leave before 7:30am, I left my car in the visitor’s car park so that I could leave early for work only to find there was a barrier across the main farm road. On enquiry we were told that it does say in the brochure but it is NOT clear enough!

A lovely site

I am also glad I didn't take notice of previous reviews. Nearly cancelled at last minute. Stayed for 3 nights good sized pitches fully serviced which we weren't expecting but that seems the norm. Placed near to excellent dog walk, pitch 19 adults only side. Facilities seemed new and very clean and warm. Yes the clock chimes throughout the night but it didn't keep us awake. 5 mins into village with 2 pubs. Overall a good site for walking and relaxing with plenty to see and do. Will definitely visit again.

Glad I don’t always read reviews!

What a great site, and am glad that I don’t always read previous reviews. It was easy to find off the A1, and although we only had one night, and we would certainly call again. We were allocated a pitch, which is what happens at “the other club”. Nice big pitches with its own water supply. The facilities were very clean, and lovely big showers, with proper hot water controls, none of the push button stuff, and there was even a shower for the dogs, which ours used. There was a big dog walk, and the village of Greetham, with a shop and pubs, was less than 2 minutes away. The church bells chimed, although we didn’t hear them after midnight, probably asleep. Finally the staff, lovely and cheery. We couldn’t have asked for anymore.

disappointed

Booked on this site just for 4 nights for a last trip before putting van in storage for winter, and was considering leaving after the first. Was allocated a pitch opposite the toilet block, I am in a trailer tent with just cotton curtains so the lights shining into the van made it like daytime (lights are all around the side of building not just on corner posts like most sites) the church clock chimed every hour all through the night and when the dogs woke me at 5 couldn't go for a walk outside as the 'barriers' are not opened till 7.30 swimming pool is £4 for half an hour! wifi was £8 for 3 days, and only 10amp hook up and the whole site tripping. Will stick to club sites in future and wont be back here

Very poor site

We stored our caravan here for some years, from not long after it opened until last year. We visited many times and witnessed first hand as the site deteriorated in almost every aspect. Firstly, its an affiliated site. Not owned or run by the club, so thats the first warning sign. The guy that actually owns it also owns the surrounding buldings, noisy workshops and farm. Each visit felt like he had added yet another new rule to control us. Almost every alteration or update to the site is done ‘on the cheap’ using second hand materials. Scalpings for the drive areas and old gpo posts as fence posts etc. Electricity is supplied by ‘ole smokey’, the wood fired generator opposite reception, which burns old oily pallets returned to the workshop adjacent the site. We soon learnt to pitch as far as possible away, cos on a bad day with the wind in the wrong direction you could hardly breath. They also reduced the EHU supplys from 16A to 10A one year, causing no end of trips on winter visits. Something they denied, but everyone we spoke to had the same issue, which had not happened before. The site goes into lockdown at night, with massive gates lockng you in or out after 11pm. Supposedly theres no movements allowed after this. With all the driveways made of loose scalpings any movement is very noisy. My sister stayed one weekend with the rally field being used by a motoring club that continued running engines late into the night, with no sign of the wardens stepping in. Having the large storage compound along with being open all year was a great attraction to us, but again we learnt not to pitch in the rows between the entrances or next to the compund gate, as theres a constant number of vans coming and going from the compound all day every day. We used the site during the swimmng pool and chalets build, putting up with lots more noise. But were never able to use the pool due to the rediculous booking system and it’s excessive cost. Another costcutting exercise as they won’t employ a lifeguard and just open the pool for general use, so instead you buy a time slot for private use. We’d stopped using the site by the time the toilet block extension build happened, but my sister did, although it was the last straw for her, hence we removed our van from the store, and will never visit again. Almost any site is better than here. But if you do go, make sure you get a pitch as far from reception as possible. We favoured far left near the bells, which never actually bothered us. But far top right would do if youve got kids. Oh and the eggs in reception are not free range. We accidentally stumbled upon the chicken sheds on a walk one day, and they’re definitely not out in the open.

Bit Dissapointed

This is the first CL for us. Allocated pitch which is ok but a bit unusual. The facilities had recently been renovated and were very clean. Location is good for a walk to the village which is nice, lovely pub which did good food and dog friendly. Quite close to some kind of heavy plant which was operational on the Friday and very noisy. Major disappointment was the electric hookup. Ok whilst we were the only ones plugged in but as soon as neighbours plugged in the electrics kept tripping the fuse. Couldn’t even boil a kettle and had to revert to boiling water on the gas cooker. Not really acceptable in this day and age and clearly needs upgrading.

Ok site

Had a one night stay here. First time on a C&CC site so not sure if it’s the norm, but I’m not sure why we had to be allocated a specific pitch? The site wasn’t far from empty but there were a few motorhomes and tourers pitched together, we ended up on our own at the other end of the field! While it’s nice to have some privacy, it’s also nice to be able to say ‘hello’ to a neighbour! Apart from that, the site was clean and quiet and the dog walk was great.

The bells, the bells!

We stayed in August and the site was more than half empty when we arrived. We were asked if we minded church bells and said no as we live in a town where Sunday ringing, visiting ringers, weddings and bell practice is the norm. However, they didn’t mean church bells, they meant the church clock. Loudly, on the hour, every hour day and night. And we were on the pitch nearest to the church. Our church turns the bells off at night, as do most churches. Avoid the pitches at the bottom of the site unless you bring earplugs. We had already booked a pitch on the adult only side and friends in two camper vans then booked later to join us and were told the adult side was full. When we arrived we asked if we could be nearby, but were told no. So they were on one side of the site and we were as far as possible on the other. This was disappointing especially when the site was so empty. Two days later, on the Sunday, it was just about full for that one day, but I would have thought any normal helpful person could have rearranged the pitches. The staff here are not helpful or approachable. The toilet block on the adult side is seriously in need of replenishment and updating - unless you use the newer side but even there the ‘posh’ chairs are showing their age. The lovely flower beds haven’t been looked after this year apart from a bit of light weeding. This is not our first visit to the site (previously we’ve been much further up the site away from the bell), and its sad to see it going downhill.

Visit with Grandchildren

Site well situated for Rutland Water. Play area for children was good. Facilities of good standard. Swimming pool voted great because we were able to reserve as a family for sole use. Small cafe on site was an unexpected bonus. Short walk to village for shop and pubs.

One we will visit again

We stayed here for a couple of days specifically to visit Stamford and Burghley House, both of which will need further visits to appreciate all there is on offer. We loved the site. We were on the adults side, which was probably less than half full, although it was the week before August Bank Holiday. We liked the wide green area around the wash block, with its pretty planting and felt that it gave an air of space and light to the site. The wash block was impressive. We have stayed on sites in a number of European countries and several within the UK and felt that these were amongst the best facilities we had seen. We particularly liked the large shower/sink/toilet rooms which meant that you could do everything in one place without moving from area to area. Much more pleasant than the usual CMC facilities. Heated floors made for extra comfort. One of the rooms which I used had a couple of hooks missing and, in general, more hooks would always be welcome - but that is true of pretty well every site we have ever been on. The walk to the village was pleasant and easy to find and we had a lovely meal in The Plough on our first night. We were lucky to get a table, as I think we were a bit early, but it is a very small dining room, so people seem to book. We noticed that the other pub, The Wheatsheaf, had its telephone number on a board outside, but we didn't get the chance to try it out - perhaps next time. The only down side was the smell from fields which had obviously just been dressed prior to ploughing, but we live in the country too and accept that it's a working environment. Pleasant wardens, although I must admit to having problems with the accent of the warden who booked us in, who seemed to speak quite fast, but that's not his problem - it's mine! We didn't bring our dogs this time, because of the places we wanted to visit, but we thought that they would love the dog walking area and we would bring them on another trip. All in all a lovely couple of days and we will come again, especially as it is less than 2 hours from home. We didn't use the pool by the way and wouldn't have done so even if it had been free.
