One of the Best
Arrived for another stay and were met by a most friendly lady warden. The site is well laid out and kept immaculate. I was surprised that for the size of site and the fact it was fully booked most nights, that the 2 wardens were on their own (they certainly earned their pay). Super facilities with large well maintained showers & an excellent laundry room. Great walks directly on site or just a couple of hundred yards from the main gate takes you to the nature reserve which is fantastic - must say I missed the noise of the geese flying overhead on this visit! Hedgeley Service Station has fuel and any supplies you may need. Alnwick has a small Morrisons and a good sized Sainsburys. Melvins in the market square in Alnwick is worth a visit - a clean friendly cafe that serves home cooked hot & cold food. We tried to eat at The Plough in Powburn but they were not serving food on the evening of Father's Day, so we drove the 10 miles to Wooler to The Tankerville Arms. What a super country hotel which was built as an annex for the visitors to Chillingham Castle. Friendly staff, great food. The Sunday Roast is a fixed price menu with a choice for everyone. Well cooked and good quantity served from 12pm to 8.30pm. Lunches are also good. There is a lovely beer garden & childrens play area. There is a Fish & Chip van on Monday nights on site which sells lovely fresh fish. All in all, such a great site, that we are going back for another week in September. It's just a pity that everyone else seems to know what a gem of a site this is!
